Mesoscale subduction at the Almeria-Oran front. Part 1: ageostrophic flow [PDF]
This paper presents a detailed diagnostic analysis of hydrographic and current meter data from three, rapidly repeated, fine-scale surveys of the Almeria-Oran front.

Balanced to Unbalanced Motions at a Submesoscale Front and Energy Transfer From Eddy Splitting
Abstract Submesoscale dynamics play a crucial role in energy redistribution in the upper ocean but remain challenging to observe due to their small spatial and temporal scales. We use ship‐based observations of an oceanic submesoscale front sampled at high resolution while repeatedly traversed to observe deformation and splitting of an embedded ...

Bridging gaps in ocean current modelling: a hybrid physics-driven deep learning approach
Global Ocean Surface Currents (GOSC) play a critical role in understanding ocean dynamics and tracking pollutant dispersion, such as marine microplastics. However, accurately reconstructing GOSC remains a challenge.

A Submesoscale Cascade‐Driven Mesoscale Seasonal Cycle in the Subtropics
Abstract We show that the submesoscale inverse cascade almost entirely drives the mesoscale kinetic energy (KE) seasonal cycle in the interior subtropical gyre. Using a coarse‐graining framework to diagnose cross‐scale energy fluxes (Πh ${{\Pi }}_{h}$), we show the forward cascade remains confined to <20 km within the mixed layer, peaking January–March.

Structure and dynamics of the Pacific North Equatorial Subsurface Current
The North Equatorial Subsurface Current (NESC) has recently been found to flow westward below the North Equatorial Countercurrent in the subsurface layer across the Pacific Ocean.

Ocean surface currents estimated from satellite remote sensing data based on a global hexagonal grid
Global ocean surface currents estimated from satellite derived data based on a regular global grid are affected by the grid’s shape and placement.

Interdecadal variability and oceanic thermohaline adjustment [PDF]
Changes in the strength of the thermohaline overturning circulation are associated, by geostrophy, with changes in the east-west pressure difference across an ocean basin.

Abstract Interannual variability of the Beaufort Sea (BFS) ice notably affects the oceanic circulation, pelagic and sympagic ecosystems, and navigation activities. However, key physical pathways regulating interseasonal connections between the El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and BFS ice concentration anomalies in early‐summer (May–July) remain ...

Evolution of geoids in recent years and its impact on oceanography
Mean surface geostrophic ocean currents may be calculated from the Mean Dynamic Topography (MDT), estimated as the difference between a mean sea surface height (MSS) calculated from radar altimeters and a reference geoid height.

Thermocline topography, horizontal currents and “ridging” in the Eastern Tropical Pacific [PDF]
ENGLISH: A primary objective of the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission is a knowledge of the ecology of tunas which inhabit the Eastern Tropical Pacific. This paper presents some results of the work in physical oceanography, which, it is hoped, will
