The ETH Zurich geotechnical drum centrifuge

International Journal of Physical Modelling in Geotechnics, 2001
A new 2.2 m diameter drum centrifuge with a maximum acceleration level of 440 g has been installed at the Institute of Geotechnical Engineering of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (Eidgenossiche Technische Hochschule: ETHZ). Twin concentric shafts allow separate control of a central tool table and a drum channel.

Water supply to a geotechnical centrifuge

International Journal of Physical Modelling in Geotechnics, 2013
The supply of water to a centrifuge experiment has always been important. This paper details a new system which has been successfully commissioned for use on the geotechnical centrifuge at University of Cambridge. High water pressures and large flow rates were delivered to an experimental package, for the modelling of water injection-aided pile ...

AFCESA Geotechnical Centrifuge

1993
Abstract : The objective of this project was to compile a user's manual for the Air Force Civil Engineering Support Agency geotechnical centrifuge. In the process it was also necessary to upgrade the centrifuge to a state-of-the-art geotechnical research facility.

Aerodynamic Power of Geotechnical Centrifuge

Advanced Materials Research, 2011
The calculated aerodynamic power by using formulas in references is always much less than practical one. The reason was found through analyzing the transformation of mechanical energy output by the motor to heat energy of the whole system and motion energy of the air newly getting in based on the relations of moment equilibrium.

Staged Embankment Construction in Geotechnical Centrifuges

Geotechnical Testing Journal, 2023
ABSTRACT This study develops a novel apparatus to simulate the staged, automatic construction of embankments in geotechnical centrifuges with improved measurement accuracy. Modular test equipment was designed to incorporate the functionality of controllable and precise sand release; its structural components include a box-like sand ...

Drum Centrifuge for Geotechnical Research

Geotechnical Testing Journal, 1984
Abstract The use of a drum centrifuge for geotechnical research is described. This type of centrifuge is distinguished by its ability to carry a payload around the entire circumference of a rotating drum. This allows the formation of “endless” slopes and gives the centrifuge a large capacity at very low cost.

The Geotechnical Centrifuge in Offshore Engineering

Offshore Technology Conference, 1996
Abstract One of the greatest needs in offshore geotechnical engineering is for large scale test measurements on which to calibrate design procedures. The geotechnical centrifuge offers at least a partial remedy. Because it allows one to properly simulate stresses, it is a legitimate, relatively inexpensive option to
