Numerical and analytical investigation of compressional wave propagation in saturated soils

open access: yes, 2016
In geotechnical earthquake engineering, wave propagation plays a fundamental role in engineering applications related to the dynamic response of geotechnical structures and to site response analysis.

Investigation on hard‐rock breaking performance and auxiliary mechanism of picks assisted with both‐sided high‐pressure water jets

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This paper investigates the high‐pressure water jet‐pick combined rock‐breaking mode (HPC), which employs high‐pressure water jets to precut grooves on both sides of the picks. The rock‐breaking patterns and performance of the HPC method are obtained, and the auxiliary rock‐breaking mechanism of water jet grooving is revealed.

Random finite element analysis on ground subsidence caused by tunnel excavation in karst regions with spatial variable soil

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This study investigates ground subsidence during tunnel excavation in karst areas, highlighting the combined effects of karst cave proximity, cave size, and soil spatial variability. Findings suggest that shorter cave distances and larger cave sizes increase subsidence variability, and a modified Peck formula is proposed for more accurate subsidence ...

The Significance of Data Integration in Geotechnical Engineering: Mitigating Risks and Enhancing Damage Assessment of Expansive Soils

open access: yesChemical Engineering Transactions, 2023
Geotechnical Engineering is a data-driven specialty that models the behavior of soil and rock as engineering materials. Due to their nature, however, much effort is directed toward defining the material properties and extent of various soil and rock on a

The damage and failure mechanism of prestatically loaded rock during medium‐strain rate cyclic impact loading

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
Based on experimental results and theoretical analysis, an established rock damage accumulation model that comprehensively considers the preapplied static load, impact peak value, impact frequency, and impact times. Abstract To study the rock damage mechanism under high static loading and superimposed medium strain rate cyclic impact loading, a series ...

Experimental testing of low energy rockfall catch fence meshes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Flexible catch fences are widely used to protect infrastructure like railways, roads and buildings from rockfall damage. The wire meshes are the most critical components for catch fences as they dissipate most of the impact energy.

Exploring wave propagation behaviors in rock: A grain‐based perspective on mineral structures

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This study investigates wave propagation in rock at the grain scale using a grain‐based model, revealing that mineral elastic modulus significantly influences wave attenuation while grain size and distribution have limited effects. A novel peak particle velocity attenuation prediction model is proposed and validated for grain‐scale wave propagation ...
