THE ECONOMIC IMPLICATIONS OF THE GEOTHERMAL POTENTIAL OF WEST AND NORTHWEST REGION OF ROMANIA [PDF]

open access: yes
The energy crises of the 70s led to the vigorous interventions of the industrialized states in the energy sector. On the European political agenda a new problem appeared, namely the one regarding the security of the energy supply.

Efficient Numerical Framework for Geothermal Energy Production Optimization in Fracture‐Controlled Reservoirs

open access: yesInternational Journal for Numerical Methods in Fluids, EarlyView.
We introduce an efficient open‐source numerical framework for the automated search for the placements of injection and production wells in hot fracture‐controlled reservoirs that sustainably optimize geothermal energy production. We model the reservoirs as discrete fracture networks in 3D. The fluid flow and heat transport in the reservoirs are modeled

Magnetotelluric Image of Transcrustal Magmatic System Beneath the Tulu Moye Geothermal Prospect in the Ethiopian Rift

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2018
Continental rifting is initiated by a dynamic interplay between tectonic stretching and mantle upwelling. Decompression melting assists continental breakup through lithospheric weakening and enforces upflow of melt to the Earth's surface.

Renewing the Exploration Approach for Mid-Enthalpy Systems: Examples from Northern England and Scotland [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
After a promising start in the 1970s and 80s, the UK rather fell behind other countries in the search for viable mid-enthalpy geothermal resources.

Evidence From Microscopy and U–Pb Geochronology as a Clue to the Influence of the Cretaceous Magmatism in the Diagenesis of Pre‐Salt Carbonate Reservoirs in the Santos Basin (Brazil)

open access: yesGeological Journal, EarlyView.
Carbonates from Santos Basin revealed U–Pb ages correlated with basalt ages (A), suggesting that they were formed during magmatic events. These events placed hot CO2 in the reservoir, which, when mixed with carbonate‐rich cold water (B), led to thermal convection, enabling the formation of the U contained in the carbonates.

Geothermal handbook. Geothermal project, 1976. [Ecological effects of geothermal resources development]

open access: yes, 1976
The geothermal program of Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Dept. of Interior, aims to develop ecologically sound practices for the exploration, development, and management of geothermal resources and the identification of the biological consequences of such development so as to minimize adverse effects on fish and wildlife resources.
