An Elasto–Plastic Hydro–Mechanical Model for Analyzing the Swelling Behavior of Heterogeneous Clay–Sulfate Rocks

open access: yesInternational Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Swelling of clay‐sulfate rocks is a concern in geotechnical engineering that can damage infrastructure. In the historic town of Staufen in southwest Germany, geothermal drilling into a swellable anhydrite‐bearing clay formation resulted in water inflow and subsequent swelling, triggering ground heave and damage to more than 250 houses.

Monitoring shallow geothermal aquifers with active‐source distributed acoustic sensing: A prognostic feasibility study on the University of Leeds Geothermal Campus

open access: yesNear Surface Geophysics, EarlyView.
Abstract The United Kingdom's shallow aquifers offer significant but underdeveloped geothermal energy resource. Seismic methods can help address this by improving the understanding of aquifer heterogeneity and potentially allowing long‐term monitoring of thermal plumes.

Calibration of a Geothermal Reservoir Model using a Global Method based on Surrogate Modeling

open access: yes, 2016
Calibration of a multi-phase, geothermal flow model is a crucial step for matching model outputs to available data and hence selecting a good set of parameters for a certain model.

Built, but not replaced: The policy failure behind the UK's ageing greenhouse sector

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Societal Impact Statement Glass greenhouse horticulture is a highly productive but often overlooked component of UK agricultural, environmental and food policy, with significant potential to contribute to food security, public health and climate resilience.

Too Hot, Too Cold, Just Right: Thermal Modulating Capacity of Different Sources of Groundwater Discharge to Salmon‐Bearing Streams

open access: yesRiver Research and Applications, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Groundwater discharge plays a key role in maintaining habitat suitability for cold‐water fish by generating streamflow and modulating temperatures. However, the thermal influence depends on groundwater source depth and how far groundwater travels from the point of discharge to a receiving stream.
