Polyphyly in the Geotrupidae (Coleoptera: Scarabaeoidea): a case for a new family

Journal of Natural History, 1996
Based on a review of 30 phylogenetically important adult and larval characters, the subfamily Bolboceratinae was found to be morphologically uniquely different from the other subfamilies of the Geotrupidae. Furthermore, it does not share any demonstrable apomorphs with any other member of the family nor with any other group of Scarabaeoidea.

Ancient origin of endemic Iberian earth-boring dung beetles (Geotrupidae)

Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution, 2011
The earth-boring dung beetles belong to the family Geotrupidae that includes more than 350 species classified into three subfamilies Geotrupinae, Lethrinae, and Taurocerastinae, mainly distributed across temperate regions. Phylogenetic relationships within the family are based exclusively on morphology and remain controversial. In the Iberian Peninsula

Phylogenetic analysis of Geotrupidae (Coleoptera, Scarabaeoidea) based on larvae

Systematic Entomology, 2004
Abstract.  Thirty‐eight characters derived from the larvae of Geotrupidae (Scarabaeoidea, Coleoptera) were analysed using parsimony and Bayesian inference. Trees were rooted with two Trogidae species and one species of Pleocomidae as outgroups. The monophyly of Geotrupidae (including Bolboceratinae) is supported

Dung exploitation by the dung beetle Typhaeus typhoeus (Col., Geotrupidae)

Oecologia, 1987
This paper deals with the functional aspects of the exploitation of dung by the dung beetle Typhaeus typhoeus. In horizontal brood chambers of a nest in the soil these beetles make "dung sausages" chiefly from rabbit droppings, as a food source for the larvae.

A new species of the genus Odonteus (Coleoptera: Geotrupidae) from northern Pakistan

Zootaxa, 2005
A remarkable new species, Odonteus gandhara Carpaneto & Mignani, n. sp., is described from northern Pakistan. The holotype (adult male) and the paratype (adult female) are illustrated and compared with O. armiger (Scopoli, 1772) and O. orientalis Mittal, 1998, the only two species of this genus recognized in the Old World. Both O.
