Mediastinal germ cell tumors

Seminars in Diagnostic Pathology, 2005
Germ Cell Tumors (GCT) represent an important group of mediastinal tumors. Because of genetic characteristics and behavior have been divided in prepubertal and postpubertal tumors, and their origin remains controversial. The genetic changes are diverse, but the most frequent is i (12p), and can be associated to gonadal disgenesis.

Germ Cell Tumors

Surgical Clinics of North America, 2006
The category of germ cell tumors includes a broad array of histologic subtypes ranging from the benign, mature teratoma to the primitive, aggressive embryonal carcinoma (Box 1). These tumors share their origin in a primordial germ cell with multipotent capacity for differentiation along a variety of pathways.

Male Germ Cells

2006
Primordial germ cells, which carry the responsibility for perpetuation of the species, are set aside from their somatic neighbors very early in mammalian embryonic development. The founder population of germ cells is rare and difficult to identify and isolate in quantities suitable for molecular and biochemical analysis, thereby highlighting the ...

Immature germ cell conception—in vitro germ cell manipulation

Best Practice & Research Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, 2000
Experimental studies in laboratory animals have shown that successful conception can be achieved by fertilizing oocytes with immature male germ cells. This gave rise to the concept that immature germ cells recovered from the testes of azoospermic men with maturation arrest may be used for assisted reproduction.

Germ cell cancer

Current Opinion in Oncology, 1999
The publication of the proceedings of Fourth Workshop on Carcinoma in situ was an impressive leap in our understanding of the interaction between prenatal and postpubertal factors in the development of germ cell cancer as well as increased insight into the molecular events that are involved in the development of these tumors. From this work, physicians

Ovarian Germ Cells

2006
Surface cells in adult ovaries represent germ line-competent embryonic stem cells. They are a novel type of totipotent progenitors for distinct cell types including female germ cells/oocytes, with the potential for use in the autologous treatment of ovarian infertility and stem cell therapy.

Germ cell transplantation

Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology, 2002
Transplantation of germ cells leads to restoration of spermatogenesis from spermatogonial stem cells. The original description of germ cell transplantation in 1994 has led to new approaches to explore many basic aspects of spermatogonial physiology.

Germ cell tumors

Current Opinion in Oncology, 2005
This review provides an overview of some of the recent pre-clinical and clinical developments in germ cell tumors.Recent epidemiological studies highlight the variations in the geographic and ethnic distribution of germ cell tumors and the changing incidence of seminoma versus nonseminoma in the population. Additional studies are continuing to identify

Germ cell lineage differentiation in non‐seminomatous germ cell tumours

The Journal of Pathology, 2005
AbstractHuman germ cell tumours (GCTs) have long fascinated investigators for a number of reasons. Being pluripotential tumours, they can differentiate into both extra‐embryonic and embryonic (somatic) tissues. However, it has never been shown convincingly that, in humans, these tumours are truly totipotent and can also give rise to the germ lineage ...

Germ cell-Sertoli cell interactions

Reproduction, Fertility and Development, 1990
The interactions between the Sertoli cells and germ cells are progressively becoming an important part of testicular physiology. This paper explores the cytological basis for these interactions, detailing the cyclic changes in the Sertoli cells in concert with the stages of the seminiferous cycle and the nature of the blood-testis barrier.
