1990년 독일통일 후 동독을 대표하거나 상징하는 많은 것은 사라졌다. 하지만 오스탈기는 독특한 문화적 현상으로서 주로 동독 제품들에 대한 애착과 동독을 주제로 한 문화 상품의 성세와 구 동독 시절의 의미 있는 성취에 대한 자의식으로 발현했다. 동독정체성은 한편으로 오스탈기 현상을 통해, 다른 한편으로는 서독인들과의 경계정체성을 통해 동독인으로서의 자의식을 발전시킴으로써 형성되었다. 그것은 얼핏 보면 ‘내적통일’의 장애로 보이는 것이 사실이다. 그것은 민족정체성 강화와 충돌하는 것으로 인지되었기 때문이다. 하지만 오스탈기와 동독정체성은 통일독일에서 집단적 이질성을 촉진하거나 분열적으로 기능하지 않았다.
