The new world tropical and subtropical members of the family Gerreidae include a group of fishes with serrations on the posterior and inferior margins of the preopercular bone. The members of this group in the western Atlantic belong to two genera, Diapterus or Eugerres. The genus Moharra is a synonym of Diapterus.
