A novel framework for automatic trimap generation using the Gestalt laws of grouping
SPIE Proceedings, 2015In this paper, we are concerned with unsupervised natural image matting. Due to the under-constrained nature of the problem, image matting algorithms are usually provided with user interactions, such as scribbles or trimaps. This is a very tedious task and may even become impractical for some applications.

A Markov Random Field Model for Image Segmentation Based on Gestalt Laws
2011This paper proposes a Markov Random Field model for image segmentation based on statistical characteristics of contours. Different from previous approaches, we use Gestalt Laws of Perceptual Organization as natural constraints for segmentation by integrating contour orientations into segmentation labels.

Perception, 1996
As revealed by the Gestalt school in the first half of the century, visual perception is governed by certain simple rules which group parts into wholes in accordance to ‘laws’ like grouping by proximity, similarity, closure, symmetry, and good continuation.
