A practical, adaptive compliance management framework for improving marine protected area effectiveness

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Noncompliance regularly undermines the effectiveness of marine protected areas (MPAs) worldwide. The reasons for and drivers of noncompliance depend on the context (e.g., insufficient funding, capacity, neocolonialism, historical conflict), but the prevalent solution offered to curtail noncompliance tends to be more or better enforcement.

Effects of water stress on dry matter content and partitioning in four grapevine cultivars (Vitis vinifera L.)

open access: yesOENO One, 2005
Three-year-old grapevines of four cultivars (Garnacha tinta (Grenache noir), Tempranillo, Chardonnay and Airén) were grown on 35 L container under full irrigation and restricted irrigation conditions in order to determine the effect of water stress on ...

Perceived costs as drivers of wildlife management preferences in rural Tanzanian communities

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Effectively managing human–wildlife interactions is crucial for fostering coexistence on shared landscapes. Management options are most effective when aligned with the preferences of people directly affected by wildlife, yet little is known about how socioecological factors influence these preferences.

Regulatory compliance and support for altered management of the exotic pet trade

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Globally, the exotic pet trade has contributed to species invasion, disease, and animal welfare risks. Although scientists have advocated for increased trade regulation, the success of management and regulatory efforts depends on compliance by participants in the exotic pet trade. We used a regulatory compliance framework to investigate exotic

Overlap of nonbreeding wandering albatrosses with fisheries and implications for colony‐specific population trajectories at South Georgia

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Bycatch in fisheries is one of the most serious threats to pelagic seabirds, causing major population declines. Mitigation measures can reduce bycatch substantially, but many fisheries fail to apply best practices, and seabird mortality remains high.

Estimation of evapotranspiration by the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Penman–Monteith temperature (PMT) and Hargreaves–Samani (HS) models under temporal and spatial criteria – a case study in Duero basin (Spain) [PDF]

open access: yesNatural Hazards and Earth System Sciences, 2020
The evapotranspiration-based scheduling method is the most common method for irrigation programming in agriculture. There is no doubt that the estimation of the reference evapotranspiration (ETo) is a key factor in irrigated agriculture.

Monitoring wildlife health for diseases with visible signs by integrating camera traps with marked individuals

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Monitoring wildlife health is essential for conservation and management, wildlife and livestock welfare, and public health in a One Health framework. Yet, wildlife health monitoring often requires long‐term fieldwork and intensive sampling, which can be costly or logistically challenging, especially for remote, rare, or elusive populations. To

Reconsidering the role of introduced species in the climate‐affected and highly invaded eastern Mediterranean

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Bioinvasions are considered mostly as a biodiversity and conservation hazard, but in specific situations, introduced species can bring ecological or socioeconomic benefits. We assessed the social–ecological role of marine introduced species in the eastern Mediterranean Sea—a global hotspot of bioinvasions and extirpations—and their potential ...
