An Overview of Statistical Methods for Studying the Extreme Rainfalls in Mediterranean

open access: yesProceedings, 2017
Extreme rainfall is one of the most devastating natural events. The frequency and intensity of these events has increased. This trend will likely continue as the effects of climate change become more pronounced.

Patient Information and Surgery Decisions: A Discrete Choice Experiment

open access: yesHealth Economics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Surgical treatments are offered more widely than ever before, increasingly to older and high‐risk patients. However, it is unclear whether patients making surgical decisions are fully informed about the risks of surgery and the available non‐surgical treatments.

Neutral pion and $$\eta $$ η meson production in p–Pb collisions at $$\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$$ sNN  = 5.02 TeV

open access: yesEuropean Physical Journal C: Particles and Fields, 2018
Neutral pion and $$\eta $$ η meson invariant differential yields were measured in non-single diffractive p–Pb collisions at $$\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$$ sNN  = 5.02 TeV with the ALICE experiment at the CERN LHC.

Determination of the up/down-quark mass within QCD sum rules in the scalar channel

open access: yesEuropean Physical Journal C: Particles and Fields, 2021
In this work, we determine up/down-quark mass $$m_{q=u/d}$$ m q = u / d in the isoscalar scalar channel from both the Shifman–Vainshtein–Zakharov (SVZ) and the Monte-Carlo-based QCD sum rules.

Spatial and Temporal Patterns of Extreme Hourly Rainfall in the Hawaiian Islands

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
The extreme rainfall trends in Hawaiʻi were revealed by hourly rainfall data: Across islands, Kauaʻi and Hawaiʻi Island had larger events at a return period. Annual maximum series of 15 gauges showed significant positive trends. While extreme rainfall trends show increases or decreases regionally, the trends varied with rainfall duration.

Measurement of the resolution of a combined hodoscope calorimeter at 18 GeV and 38 GeV [PDF]

open access: yesNuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment, 1988
Abstract The energy and spatial resolution of a combined detector consisting of the Cherenkov photon calorimeter GAMS-2000 and the modular hadron calorimeter MHC-100 has been studied at 18.5 and 38 GeV incident pion energies at the IHEP accelerator. The energy resolution of the combined setup is substantially improved by applying a correction based ...

Predicting Statistical Signatures of Collective Emission in Disordered Color Center Ensembles

open access: yesLaser &Photonics Reviews, EarlyView.
We present an efficient simulation framework for modeling collective emission in disordered ensembles of quantum emitters. The low computational complexity enables large‐scale Monte Carlo simulations. Applied to SiV−${\rm SiV}^{-}$ clusters, it predicts thresholded superradiant bursts set by emitter number and quantum efficiency, as well as interaction‐

A composite model for the 750 GeV diphoton excess [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
A bstractWe study a simple model in which the recently reported 750 GeV diphoton excess arises from a composite pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson — hidden pion — produced by gluon fusion and decaying into two photons. The model only introduces an extra hidden

Probing the existence of a new charged vector boson decaying into heavy neutral leptons using ultra-peripheral heavy ion collisions at ATLAS

open access: yesEuropean Physical Journal C: Particles and Fields
In this paper we explore the potential of Ultra-peripheral Collisions at the LHC to investigate new physics, focusing on the production of new charged vector bosons $${V}^{\pm }$$ V ± that decay into heavy neutral leptons $$N_{L}$$ N L in the context of ...
