Proposing a Governance Model for Environmental Crises
During August 2021, a wildfire outbreak in Evia, Greece’s second largest island, resulted in a major environmental and economic crisis. Apart from biodiversity and habitat loss, the disaster triggered a financial crisis because it wiped out wood ...

Neutron Drops and Skyrme Energy-Density Functionals
The J$^{\pi}$=0$^+$ ground state of a drop of 8 neutrons and the lowest 1/2$^-$ and 3/2$^-$ states of 7-neutron drops, all in an external well, are computed accurately with variational and Green's function Monte Carlo methods for a Hamiltonian containing

Spin-orbit and tensor interactions in homogeneous matter of nucleons: accuracy of modern many-body theories [PDF]
We study the energy per particle of symmetric nuclear matter and pure neutron matter using realistic nucleon--nucleon potentials having non central tensor and spin--orbit components, up to three times the empirical nuclear matter saturation density ...

This work demonstrates the electrostatic control of photoluminescence in monolayer MoS2 using free‐standing BaTiO3 (BTO) at room temperature. BTO enables highly tunable exciton emission with minimal gate voltage. It induces large peak emission shifts and tunable A trion binding energy.

Quantum Monte Carlo Calculations of Light Nuclei [PDF]
Accurate quantum Monte Carlo calculations of ground and low-lying excited states of light p-shell nuclei are now possible for realistic nuclear Hamiltonians that fit nucleon-nucleon scattering data. At present, results for more than 30 different (J^pi;T)

The virtual impedance (VI) control method is widely used to limit fault current for grid-forming converter (GFMC). However, in this article, it is found that the VI deteriorates the transient synchronization stability of the GFMC under grid faults.

Microwave-Assisted Routes for the Synthesis of Complex Functional Oxides
The synthesis of complex functional inorganic materials, such as oxides, can be successfully performed by using microwave irradiation as the source of heat.

Study of a hard-core boson model with ring-only interactions
We present a Quantum Monte Carlo study of a hardcore boson model with ring-only exchanges on a square lattice, where a $K_1$ term acts on 1$\times$1 plaquettes and a $K_2$ term acts on 1$\times$2 and 2$\times$1 plaquettes.

Quantum Monte Carlo calculations of weak transitions in $A\,$=$\,$6--10 nuclei
Ab initio calculations of the Gamow-Teller (GT) matrix elements in the $\beta$ decays of $^6$He and $^{10}$C and electron captures in $^7$Be are carried out using both variational and Green's function Monte Carlo wave functions obtained from the Argonne $
