He had an encyclopaedic knowledge and wrote a great number of "books on many subjectsj ethics, Islamic jurisprudence, theology, metaphysics and logic. Ethics occupied a central position in his thought.

In 1095 he resigned his teaching posts and set out on a pilgrimage, a quest for religious certainty, during which he vowed never again to serve the political authorities or teach in state-sponsored schools.
