Ghost fishing activity in derelict blue crab traps in Louisiana

Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2014
Derelict crab traps impact the coastal ecosystem through continued catch of target species and species of conservation, economic, or recreational importance. During volunteer-supported crab trap cleanups in 2012 and 2013, we quantified ghost fishing activity in derelict crab traps in coastal Louisiana through a citizen scientist program.

Mirror self-recognition in ghost crab (Ocypode quadrata)

Animal Cognition, 2023
Mirror self-recognition has been examined primarily in vertebrate species, largely through the use of a mirror mark test. Recently, however, there has been growing interest in the notion that all animals likely need some form of self-representation to successfully interact with their environment (Kohda et al.

Ghost crab (Ocypode quadrata) modify their behavior during mirror exposure

Behavioural Processes
Recently, ghost crabs (Ocypode quadrata) were shown to exhibit behavior consistent with passing the mark test, which implies the capacity for self-recognition. Considering this, it seems reasonable to suggest these animals can also distinguish their mirror image from different social stimuli, such as live conspecifics.
