Multiple-Scattering-Induced “Ghost Echoes” in GPM DPR Observations of a Tornadic Supercell

open access: yesJournal of Applied Meteorology and Climatology, 2016
AbstractEvidence of multiple-scattering-induced pulse stretching for the signal of both frequencies of the Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) on the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission Core Observatory satellite is presented on the basis of collocated ground-based WSR-88D S-band observations of an extreme case: a tornadic supercell ...

Whole‐Genome Sequencing Pilot of the Central Asian Genomic Diversity Project Reveals Distinct Histories, Adaptation, and Introgression

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
As a pilot phase of the Central Asian Genomic Diversity Project, whole‐genome sequencing of 166 individuals from 20 Central Asian and Afghan Hazara populations reveals fine‐scale substructure shaped by repeated trans‐Eurasian migration and admixture. Integrated analyses uncover post‐admixture adaptation, archaic introgression, and medically relevant ...

Ghost-in-the-Machine Reveals Human Social Signals for Human-Robot Interaction

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology, 2015
We used a new method called Ghost-in-the-Machine (GiM) to investigate social interactions with a robotic bartender taking orders for drinks and serving them. Using the GiM paradigm allowed us to identify how human participants recognise the intentions of

Structural Colors from Modulated Topological Defects in Molecular Smectic Liquid Crystals

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Rather than using dyes and pigments, nature produces the colors of some butterflies and beetles through optical interference phenomena. This study describes an original biomimetic strategy exploiting the spontaneous formation of modulated linear defects in thin films of 8CB, a common molecular liquid crystal.

Ghost Songs : Echoes from Wounded Knee

open access: yesJournal de la Société des Américanistes, 1993
The Ghost Dance of the Lakota is irretrievably linked to the infamous Wounded Knee Massacre of 1890. An examination of the cultural elements comprising the philosophy practice of the ritual reveals a distinct form of religious worship that is undeniably Lakota.

Chemical Bond‐Orchestrated Energy Depletion to Augment Lung Cancer Chemo‐Immunotherapy

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study grafted dichloroacetic acid (DCA) into perylenediimide (PDI) skeleton via ionic or covalent bond to create novel metabolic agent PDIC‐AC and PDIC‐NAC, explicitly elaborated the underlying energy metabolism and therapeutic mechanism, and developed a promising strategy for energy metabolism‐targeting chemo‐immunotherapy by chemical bond ...

The Conservative Avant-Garde

open access: yesRevista Brasileira de Estudos da Presença, 2012
This article discusses the so-called artistic avant-garde in the twenty-first century, particularly in regard to theatre and performance art; in other words, this text brings into question the current state of those forms of expression.

Dual‐polarity GRAPPA for simultaneous reconstruction and ghost correction of echo planar imaging data [PDF]

open access: yesMagnetic Resonance in Medicine, 2015
PurposeThe purpose of this study was to seek improved image quality from accelerated echo planar imaging (EPI) data, particularly at ultrahigh fields. Certain artifacts in EPI reconstructions can be attributed to nonlinear phase differences between data acquired using frequency‐encoding gradients of alternating polarity.

A new drag and lift correlation for spherocylinders from fully resolved Immersed Boundary Method

open access: yesAIChE Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract Many industrial processes deal with non‐spherical particles, e.g., mineral mining and biomass conversion. It is crucial to understand the particles' hydrodynamics to control and optimize these processes. To extend the current state‐of‐the‐art from arrays of spherical particles to spherocylindrical particles, we performed extensive particle ...

Parametric Analysis of Spiking Neurons in 16 nm Fin Field‐Effect Transistor Technology

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Discovery, EarlyView.
Energy efficient computing has driven a shift toward brain‐inspired neuromorphic hardware. This study explores the design of three distinct silicon neuron topologies implemented in 16 nm fin field‐Effect transistor technology. While the Axon‐Hillock design achieves gigahertz throughput, its functional fragility persists. The Morris–Lecar model captures
