Tailed giant Tupanvirus possesses the most complete translational apparatus of the known virosphere

open access: yesNature Communications, 2018
Here we report the discovery of two Tupanvirus strains, the longest tailed Mimiviridae members isolated in amoebae. Their genomes are 1.44–1.51 Mb linear double-strand DNA coding for 1276–1425 predicted proteins.

Coupling of giant resonances to soft E1 and E2 modes in B-8

open access: yes, 2002
The dynamic coupling between giant resonance states and "soft", low-energy excitation, modes in weakly-bound nuclei is investigated. A coupled-channels calculation is reported for the reaction 8B + Pb --> p + 7Be + Pb at 83 MeV/nucleon.

Nano-kirigami with giant optical chirality

open access: yesScience Advances, 2018
On-site nano-kirigami enabled continuous shape transformation of gold nanofilm for 3D nanofabrication and giant optical chirality. Kirigami enables versatile shape transformation from two-dimensional (2D) precursors to 3D architectures with simplified ...

Single‐cell mRNA sequencing of giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) seminoma reveals the cellular and molecular characteristics of tumour cells

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science
Testicular tumours are zoonoses that can occur in not only human, but other animals, include giant pandas. A middle‐aged male giant panda named Fufu was diagnosed with a testicular tumour and underwent surgery to remove the entire left testis. The testis

Optical and radio properties of giant radio quasars: Central black hole characteristics

open access: yes, 2012
We analysed the optical and radio properties of lobe-dominated giant-sized (> 0.72 Mpc) radio quasars and compared the results with those derived for a sample of smaller radio sources to determine whether the large size of some extragalactic radio ...

Blood mir-331-3p is a potential diagnostic marker for giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) testicular tumor

open access: yesBMC Veterinary Research
Background In recent years, several giant pandas have suffered from testicular tumor, which has seriously affected giant panda health. However, the pathogenesis of testicular tumor in giant panda is still unclear.

The effect of planet-planet scattering on the survival of exomoons

open access: yes, 2013
Compared to the giant planets in the solar system, exoplanets have many remarkable properties such as the prevalence of giant planets on eccentric orbits and the presence of hot Jupiters. Planet-planet scattering (PPS) between giant planets is a possible

The mysterious long-range transport of giant mineral dust particles

open access: yesScience Advances, 2018
Strong winds, turbulence, convective uplift, and electric charge may keep giant particles aloft. Giant mineral dust particles (>75 μm in diameter) found far from their source have long puzzled scientists.
