The giant butterfly-moth Paysandisia archon has spectrally rich apposition eyes with unique light-dependent photoreceptor dynamics [PDF]
The palm borer moth Paysandisia archon (Burmeister, 1880) (fam. Castniidae) is a large, diurnally active palm pest. Its compound eyes consist of ~ 20,000 ommatidia and have apposition optics with interommatidial angles below 1°. The ommatidia contain nine photoreceptor cells and appear structurally similar to those in nymphalid butterflies.

Silene, a versatile model system: from sex and genome evolution to ecology and speciation
Summary Fundamental and applied research in evolutionary biology benefits from the use of model systems in which approaches from disparate disciplines can be integrated. Here, we review recent progress in evolutionary research on the long‐standing model system Silene, a large genus with a well‐resolved phylogeny and newly available, expanded genomic ...

Preservative Ethanol From Stomach Contents Is a Reliable Proxy for Diet DNA Metabarcoding
We tested whether DNA metabarcoding of preservative ethanol can substitute bulk stomach contents for reconstructing diets. Using two ethanol DNA extraction methods (precipitation and drying), the resulting profiles showed minor differences relative to each other and to bulk contents in richness, composition, and read counts, mostly limited to low ...

Catalysts for change: Museum gardens in a planetary emergency
Natural history museums are often seen as places with indoor galleries full of dry‐dusty specimens, usually of animals. But if they have gardens associated with them, museums can use living plants to create narratives that link outside spaces to inside galleries, bringing to life the challenges facing biodiversity.
