Although it frequently is grouped along with pigmented villonodular synovitis, it is a separate type of lesion with only some histologic similarities. It is characteristically a more nodular form of localized tenosynovitis occurring primarily in the hands.

Many different theories have recently been proposed as to whether GCTTS is a neoplasm or a localized reactive process. We believe the evidence supports a neoplastic origin.

Giant-celled tumors of tendon sheaths
The American Journal of Surgery, 1929Abstract A case is reported of giant-celled tumor of the tendon sheath of the finger. Such tumors are of comparatively rare occurrence. This case is of particular interest in that it caused bone erosion by pressure. Such cases often give a clear-cut history of antecedent trauma which is believed to play an etiological role.
