To study the genome diversity of bacteriophages from geographically distant natural populations, new giant ϕKZ-like Pseudomonas aeruginosa phages isolated in two different regions were compared with earlier known phages of three species (ϕKZ, Lin68, EL). A broad spectrum of lytic activity was demonstrated for all ϕKZ-like phages.

Comparison of DNA sizes in a group of giant Pseudomonas aeruginosa phages by the PFGE method
Russian Journal of Genetics, 2008Genome sizes of Pseudomonas aeruginosa phages phiKZ and EL earlier determined by sequence analysis were shown to correspond to sizes of their DNAs assessed by pulse-electrophoresis (PFGE). Putative "redundant" genes in phiKZ phage genome are supposed to control functions promoting vigorous growth of the phage belonging to this species, compared to ...

Properties and structure of a gene 24-controlled T4 giant phage
Journal of Molecular Biology, 1976Abstract Giant T4 bacteriophage were found by Doermann et al. (1973a) with point mutants in gene 23 and by Cummings et al. (1973) after l -canavanine induction followed by an arginine chase. We now find T4 giant phage with 14 out of 15 tested temperature-sensitive mutants in gene 24 grown at intermediate temperatures between 33 °C and 37 °C.
