Very effective treatment for giardiasis is available. There is little to choose in efficacy between the major drugs I have mentioned, used at optimum dosage, but mepacrine probably has a higher frequency of unwanted effects than many of the newer drugs, and the required duration of treatment is longer.

Parasitology Today, 1988
Symptoms of giardiasis vary widely - partly owing to host characteristics and partly, perhaps, to different 'strains' of the parasite. In parallel, the immune response to Giardia also varies - involving humoral and cellular components both in the serum and the intestinal mucosa.

Current Treatment Options in Gastroenterology, 2005
Tinidazole is the first-line drug treatment of giardiasis, as it requires only a single dose to cure infection in most individuals. The related drug metronidazole is as effective, but it requires 5 to 7 days of three times a day therapy. Nitazoxanide appears in limited studies to be as effective as tinidazole or metronidazole, and it does not have the ...

Publisher Summary Organisms in the genus Giardia are widely distributed, flagellated protozoan parasites of all classes of vertebrates. Giardia is an intestinal protozoan parasite of humans.. Under appropriate conditions, they can cause disease. This chapter summarizes the progress in the study of Giardia and its relation with its host.

Giardiasis is still regularly encountered in the United States, both as endemic cases from the local community as well as in patients returning from travel abroad. Giardiasis should be suspected in any child with steatorrhea, unexplained chronic diarrhea (especially if associated with growth failure), weight loss, or abdominal pain and bloating ...

Giardiasis in pregnancy can be a debilitating disease with threatens the well-being of mother and fetus, as illustrated by three cases. The usual therapeutic agents are contraindicated in pregnancy. Paromomycin, an oral, poorly absorbed aminoglycoside, is an alternate, potentially less toxic agent for treatment of symptomatic giardiasis in pregnancy ...

The Nurse Practitioner, 1986
Giardiasis is the number one parasite-caused gastrointestinal illness in the United States. It can be acquired through various water sources or the fecal-oral route. The detection and treatment of giardiasis can be difficult. Nurse practitioners, as primary health care providers, often see patients presenting with gastrointestinal complaints.

It is over 10 years since Meyer and Radulescu (1979) reviewed Giardia and giardiasis in Advances in Parasitology. In their introduction, they emphasized that "despite their ubiquity and antiquity, the Giardia have, until recently, been little studied". In the intervening years, Giardia has been extensively studied.
