Mitigating unaccounted fishing mortality from gillnets and traps
Fish and Fisheries, 2015AbstractGillnets and traps often are considered to have fewer holistic environmental impacts than active fishing gears. However, in addition to the targeted catches, gillnets and traps still cause unwanted mortalities due to (i) discarding, (ii) ghost fishing of derelict gear, (iii) depredation, (iv) escaping or dropping out of gear, (v) habitat damage,

Experimental studies of Pacific herring gillnets
Fisheries Research, 1986Abstract Gillnet selectivity in the Pacific herring roe fishery was examined using experimental apparatus. Estimates of size-specific selectivity of monofilament gillnets were calculated by comparing numbers and lengths of fish retained in nets with those that swam through the net into a trap.

Abstract This paper is the second part of a general programme to establish the real effectiveness of fishing gear. The data collected in the first part concerning cod gillnet effectiveness are now used together with such other data as could be gleaned to attempt a simulation model of the processes by which cod become caught in a bottom-set gillnet ...

This paper reviews studies on gillnet selectivity: the relevant characteristics of fish and nets, graphical and mathematical representation of selectivity curves, and methods of estimation. F. I. Baranov started these studies 60 yr ago, and most subsequent work has been consistent with his axioms that a) gillnets catch fish whose head girths are ...

Effects on catch rates of baiting gillnets
Fisheries Research, 2000In this paper we investigate whether the use of bait on gillnets increases catch rates. Experiments were conducted during ordinary fishing in Norwegian waters for three different species; cod, ling and Greenland halibut. Each third gillnet of a fleet consisting of 24 nets was baited with mackerel. Catch rate of this experimental fleet was compared with
