Improved acoustic detection and identification of gillnets
Applied Acoustics, 2000Abstract A study of the acoustic backscattering produced by an array of scattering spheres fixed to a fishing net is reported. The system enhances net detection and also allows net identification by using a method in which the echogram is arranged to resemble a commercial bar-code.

A new algorithm for estimating gillnet selectivity
Chinese Journal of Oceanology and Limnology, 2010The estimation of gear selectivity is a critical issue in fishery stock assessment and management. Several methods have been developed for estimating gillnet selectivity, but they all have their limitations, such as inappropriate objective function in data fitting, lack of unique estimates due to the difficulty in finding global minima in minimization,

Fish morphology and estimating selectivity by gillnets
Fisheries Research, 1999Abstract A fleet of gillnets of various mesh sizes was fished in the Patos Lagoon, Brazil, to investigate how measurements of a fish's body can best be used to determine the selectivity by gillnets. Catch data were analysed for four morphologically dissimilar species: Micropogonias furnieri and Menticirrhus americanus (Sciaenidae), Mugil ...

Evaluating catches of salmonids taken by gillnets
Journal of Fish Biology, 1995Data from 10 185 gillnetted brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) and 5777 Arctic charr [Salvelinus alpinus (L.)] were analysed. Relative to mesh size, the most efficiently caught fish length (the modal length) was somewhat larger with floated nets than with smaller nets placed on the bottom.

Incidental Catch of Cetaceans with Salmon Gillnet
Journal of the Fisheries Research Board of Canada, 1975Using data on number of cetaceans caught per 1000 "tans" (= approximately 50 m) of salmon drift gillnet, incidental catch rates by salmon research vessels of the Japanese Fisheries Agency averaged 0.476. The maximum was 1.42. The average ranged between 0.37 and 0.65 from 1962 to 1971, indicating negligible effect on porpoise populations. These figures

Quality Determinants of Gillnet-Caught Alaska Salmon
Journal of Aquatic Food Product Technology, 2017In 2010 and 2011, researchers in Bristol Bay, Alaska followed nearly 22,000 tagged sockeye salmon that were caught by 86 selected gillnet boats and delivered unfrozen to tenders anchored out on the...

MODIFYING GILLNETS TO REDUCE ENTANGLEMENT OF CETACEANS
Marine Mammal Science, 1991AbstractTo reduce the number of cetaceans caught incidentally in gillnets, two forms of acoustic modifications have previously been proposed. These modifications seek to make gillnets more obvious to cetaceans so they can avoid them, and include making gillnets more reflective to cetacean sonar and placing active sound emitters in the nets.

GILLNET SELECTIVITY AND FACTORS AFFECTING SELECTIVITY
