Chasing Fish: 130 Years of Innovation, Displacement and Depletion in Scottish Fisheries

open access: yesFish and Fisheries, Volume 27, Issue 2, Page 227-247, March 2026.
ABSTRACT Rebuilding the depleted fisheries of the 21st century requires an understanding of past drivers of their decline. Despite Scotland's central role in the commercial exploitation of North Sea fisheries for over a century, associations between technological innovations, regulatory introductions and fishery landings have not previously been ...

First Aircraft‐Based VOC Measurements Using Thermal Infrared Remote Sensing: Mapping Fire Plumes With the Scanning High‐Resolution Interferometer Sounder (S‐HIS)

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 4, 28 February 2026.
Abstract Wildfires emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that contribute to ozone and aerosol pollution. Quantification is challenged by the diversity of emitted species and by their complex dependence on fire characteristics, with scarce field observations available for model evaluation.

Uncovering Latent Structures of School Belonging, Emotional Problems, Psychological Symptoms, Meaningful School, and Ostracism: A Latent Profile Analysis

open access: yesBrain and Behavior, Volume 16, Issue 2, February 2026.
This study explored how school belonging interacts with emotional and psychological factors among adolescents. Using latent profile analysis with a sample of 749 students, four distinct profiles were identified. The first group, Distressed but Included, showed high emotional problems despite average levels of ostracism.

Extending the Use of Mendelian Randomisation With Non‐Inherited Variants to Assess Socially Transmitted Parental Exposures Under Assortative Mating

open access: yesGenetic Epidemiology, Volume 50, Issue 1, February 2026.
ABSTRACT A longstanding aim of developmental psychology and epidemiology is to understand the causal effects of parental phenotypes on offspring outcomes. Traditional approaches often fail to account for confounding and reverse causation. We evaluate the use of Mendelian randomisation with non‐inherited variants (MR‐NIV) to address these limitations ...

Shifting Syllable Production in an Ex Situ Population of a Critically Endangered Songbird

open access: yesZoo Biology, Volume 45, Issue 1, Page 29-36, January/February 2026.
Bali mynas produced songs containing more syllables under increased anthropogenic disturbance. ABSTRACT Singing is an ecologically important behaviour for songbirds. Syllables function as the building blocks of birdsong, so changes to their production will have implications for overall song structure.

A New Method for Probabilistic Spatiotemporal Forecasts of Solar Soft X‐Ray “S‐Class” (>X10) Superflares

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, Volume 131, Issue 2, February 2026.
Abstract Solar superflares of S‐class (>X10 in soft X‐rays) pose extreme space weather hazards, yet their prediction remains a fundamental challenge owing to their rapid and transient natures and the limitations of conventional event‐based forecasts. We introduce for the first time, a probabilistic spatiotemporal framework designed to identify extended

Silicon‐Rich Nitride Refractive Index as a Degree of Freedom to Maximize Nonlinear Wave Mixing in Nanowaveguides

open access: yesAdvanced Photonics Research
Silicon nitride is widely used in integrated photonics for optical nonlinear wave mixing due to its low optical losses combined with relatively high nonlinear optical properties and a wide‐range transparency window.

Key drivers of at‐vessel mortality in demersal sharks

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 40, Issue 1, February 2026.
Abstract Chondrichthyans are highly vulnerable to fisheries overexploitation, and postcapture mortality poses a significant threat to most species. Global bycatch mitigation guidelines recommend adopting hierarchical decision‐making approaches tailored to species‐specific vulnerabilities and socioeconomic and regulatory contexts.
