At the turn of the 19th–20th c., the movement of Lithuanian national revival was motivating to cherish the mother tongue and culture and increase the number of educated Lithuanians. G. Petkevičaitė-Bitė and J. Tumas-Vaižgantas urged their countrymen to educate children, equally boys and girls.
