DIPHENYLHYDANTOIN (Dilantin) sodium was synthesized in 1908 by Biltz1and introduced as an antiepileptic agent in 1938 by Merritt and Putnam.2Extensive subsequent use of this drug has confirmed its efficacy in controlling epileptic seizures, particularly major motor (grand mal) convulsions.

Gingival hyperplasia is a typical adverse reaction of certain drugs (phenytoin, calcium antagonists and cyclosporine). Also oral contraceptives and presumably hormone replacement therapy may rarely lead to gingival hyperplasia. By differential diagnosis a paraneoplastic syndrome has to be taken into account.

Fifty patients receiving nifedipine have been observed for the presence of gingival hyperplasia. Thirty were males and 20 females, the mean age was 57.7 ± 14.5 years. The duration of therapy with Nifedipine at the time of dermatological examination was 18.25 ± 16 months (min. 2, max. 48).
