Justice and Gini coefficients

Politics, Philosophy & Economics, 2014
Gini coefficients, which measure gross inequalities rather than their unfair components, are often used as proxy measures of absolute or relative distributive injustice in Western societies. This presupposes that the fair inequalities in these societies are small and stable enough to be ignored.

On the Interpretation and Disaggregation of Gini Coefficients

The Economic Journal, 1976
Problems of inequality related to the disaggregation of Gini coefficients are examined. Measures of inequality can be decomposed so that in a grouped population, total inequality depends on inequality within and between groups. No such decomposition is available for the Gini coefficient, yet its direct relationship to the Lorenz curve has resulted in ...

A spatial decomposition of the Gini coefficient

Letters in Spatial and Resource Sciences, 2012
The paper introduces a spatial decomposition of the Gini coefficient that supports the detection of spatial autocorrelation conjointly with an indicator of overall inequality. An additive pairwise decomposition based on a spatial weights matrix partitions inequality between observations that are geographically neighbors and those that are not.

An axiomatization of the Gini coefficient

Mathematical Social Sciences, 1982
Abstract This paper deals with the axiomatization of the Gini coefficient in the general case, i.e. it characterizes its cardinal properties in ranking income distributions whose aggregate incomes and populations are not necessarily the same. An axiomatization of an index asymptotically equal to the Gini coefficient is also given.

Social welfare and the gini coefficient revisited

Mathematical Social Sciences, 1985
The question of conflict between the rankings of income distributions with the same mean by the Gini coefficient and by individualistic social welfare functions is re-examined. The negative result of \textit{D. Newbery} [J. Econ. Theory 2, 264-266 (1970)] is extended.

The Gini Index as a Coefficient of Variation

The coefficient of variation, which measures the variability of a distribution from its mean, is not uniquely defined in the multidimensional case, and so is the multidimensional Gini index, which measures the inequality of a distribution in terms of the mean differences among its observations.

An analysis of the bounds for the Gini coefficient

Journal of Econometrics, 1981
Abstract The bounds on the Gini coefficient obtained by Gastwirth for the case of grouped data are considered. While the population bounds will always include the value of the population Gini coefficient and the estimated bounds will always include a suitably chosen estimate of the Gini coefficient, estimated bounds need not include the value of the ...
