On the Gini measure decomposition [PDF]

open access: yesStatistics and Probability Letters, 2011
The purpose of this research is to introduce a new approach to the decomposition of the Gini measure in terms of concordance and discordance shares: a new kind of dependence, the (), and its formal definition are provided.

Fairness and Gini decomposition

Economics Letters, 2023
We propose a new decomposition of the Gini coefficient that nests a structuralist and an individualistic definition of unfair inequality, as well as ex ante and ex post measures of inequality of opportunity. We illustrate the decomposition on Belgian data, highlighting the source of a consistent difference between these views about unfair inequality.

Note on the Decomposition of Gini Inequality

The Review of Economics and Statistics, 1994
The purpose of this note is to propose a decomposition of the Gini index of inequality into within and between subpopulations using the Lerman-Yitzhaki covariance method. The present method suggests that once the population is arranged in ascending order of income and assigned ranks, the same ranks will be used to calculate total as well as between ...

Gini decompositions and Gini elasticities [PDF]

open access: possible, 2014
This paper points to flaws in Gini decompositions by income sources and population subgroups and to common pitfalls in the interpretation of decomposition results, focusing on methods within the framework of Rao (1969). We argue that within this framework Gini elasticities may provide the only meaningful way to examine the relevance of income sources ...

A spatial decomposition of the Gini coefficient

Letters in Spatial and Resource Sciences, 2012
The paper introduces a spatial decomposition of the Gini coefficient that supports the detection of spatial autocorrelation conjointly with an indicator of overall inequality. An additive pairwise decomposition based on a spatial weights matrix partitions inequality between observations that are geographically neighbors and those that are not.

EXTENSIONS OF DAGUM’S GINI DECOMPOSITION [PDF]

open access: possible, 2005
The purpose of this paper is to extend Dagum’s Gini decomposition (“A New Approach to the Decomposition of the Gini Income Inequality Ratio”, Empirical Economics 22(4), 515-531, 1997a) following three types of theoretical modelisation. The first one deals with a “poor/non-poor” decomposition within a sub-group multilevel framework.

A new approach to the decomposition of the Gini income inequality ratio

Empirical Economics, 1997
The purpose of this research is to introduce a new approach to the decomposition of the Gini ratio into three components, supporting them with economic and statistical rigorous interpretations. The three components are: (i) the Gini inequality within subpopulations; (ii) the net contribution of the extended Gini inequality between subpopulations; and ...
