Development of vagal innervation to the muscle of the avian gizzard
Journal of the Autonomic Nervous System, 1993The development of the vagal innervation to the gizzard has been investigated in chick embryos and young chicks. The membrane potential, first measurable on the 15th day of incubation, was -54 +/- 0.5 mV and increased with development to -67 +/- 0.4 mV. The latter value was attained 5 days after hatching and persisted thereafter.

Studies on the avian gizzard: Morphology and innervation of the smooth muscle
Zeitschrift f�r Zellforschung und Mikroskopische Anatomie, 1969Light and electron-microscope studies of the smooth muscle of the gizzard and its innervation in the chick and the pigeon have been made. The muscle is organised into extensive interlocking bundles, with frequent anastomoses between adjacent bundles. Nexuses are common between apposing smooth muscle cell membranes.

Gizzard Erosion in Broiler Chicks by Group I Avian Adenovirus
Avian Diseases, 2001Incidences of mortality without any clinical signs occurred in growing chicks in a broiler flock. Five 17-day-old dead broilers with gizzard erosions were investigated pathologically. Macroscopically, the gizzards were found to be dilated with bloody fluids. The koilin layer of the gizzards showed multifocal black patches (erosions).
