Permafrost Mass Wasting in Ice‐Rich Landscapes: Recent Advances (2013 to 2024) on Mechanisms, Dynamics and Impacts

open access: yesPermafrost and Periglacial Processes, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Across circumpolar permafrost regions, climate change is destabilizing ice‐rich hillslopes, increasing the frequency and magnitude of thaw‐driven mass wasting. This paper reviews recent studies (2013–2024) on thaw‐driven mass wasting, focusing on the processes, morphology and trajectories of geomorphic change and their implications for ...

Subsurface Investigations of Cryo‐Hydrogeological Features in a High Arctic Catchment Under Transition

open access: yesPermafrost and Periglacial Processes, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In this study, the internal structure and seasonal variations of cryo‐hydrogeological features were investigated in the Fuglebekken catchment, located near the Polish Polar Station Hornsund in Svalbard. Over a few years, rising air temperatures and intensified water circulation have significantly altered the distribution, extent, and state of ...

Associating Local‐Scale Physical Habitat Assemblages With Reach‐Scale Stream Hydrogeomorphological Types in Mountain Headwater Catchments

open access: yesRiver Research and Applications, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Building an understanding of river ecosystems often involves integrating information from different locations, spatial scales and points in time. Geomorphologists and ecologists have long considered ways to explore river ecosystems at different, hierarchical, spatial scales so that features observed locally can be linked to the character of ...

Repeated ice streaming on the northwest Greenland continental shelf since the onset of the Middle Pleistocene Transition [PDF]

open access: yesThe Cryosphere, 2020
Ice streams provide a fundamental control on ice sheet discharge and depositional patterns along glaciated margins. This paper investigates ancient ice streams by presenting the first 3D seismic geomorphological analysis of a major glacigenic succession ...

Glacial geomorphology of the Marinelli and Pigafetta glaciers, Cordillera Darwin Icefield, southernmost Chile

open access: yesJournal of Maps, 2018
This paper presents a glacial geomorphological map relating to two rapidly receding glaciers in the Cordillera Darwin Icefield. The Marinelli marine-terminating glacier and Pigafetta freshwater-terminating glacier are selected to represent different ...

Apex predators exploit advantageous snow conditions across hunting modes

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
Advantageous snow conditions—in terms of snow depth and density—are among the most important features of the winter landscape for two apex predators, regardless of hunting strategy. In a warming climate, the knock‐on effects of a diminishing snowpack may reduce the hunting success of multiple large carnivore species.

The Climate Niche Pressure on the Yunnan–Guizhou Plateau Predominates the Diversification of Advertisement Calls in Frogs (Leptobrachella)

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
The diversification of advertisement calls is largely driven by climatic niche differentiation. Our results provide acoustic evidence for studies on ecological speciation in anurans.

The surficial geology record of ice stream catchment dynamics and ice-divide migration in the Quebec-Labrador sector of the Laurentide Ice Sheet

open access: yesQuaternary Science Advances
The surficial geology of an approximately 30 000 km2 region in northeastern Quebec and western Labrador was mapped to elucidate the glacial dynamics of a region that experienced ice divide migrations and determine the net effect of this evolution on the ...

Phantasmic Encounters in the Arctic: Haunting Materialities Beyond the Ghosts of War

open access: yesAnthropology of Consciousness, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In the vast north, ghostly experiences are common for locals and outsiders alike. Here, we explore how cultural‐natural attributes, like remoteness and extreme seasonal variation, compound experiences of the haunting in visceral ways. This provides the Arctic region with an unusually pronounced baseline of other‐than‐human agency, which in the
