Saline Permafrost and Cryopegs as Potentially Important Sources of CO2—Assessing Organic Carbon Mineralization Potentials on the Alaskan Coastal Plain

Incubation experiments reveal that potentially carbon‐rich saline permafrost and cryopegs from Arctic coastal plains exhibit CO2 production potentials comparable to active layers. This could substantially shift greenhouse gas balances, as salinity is currently not accounted for in permafrost carbon assessments.
