There is increasing frequency of building heavily loaded structures bearing on tills and in the assessment of their foundation design difficulty has been experienced in interpreting the rather scattered results frequently obtained in testing such stony soils.

The first method is based on tritium tracer studies, hydraulic head measurements and digital model simulations, while the second method is the mathematical evaluation described by Snow (1968) for fracture porosities of consolidated rock.
