Rate-and-state friction explains glacier surge propagation

open access: yesNature Communications, 2019
The incomplete understanding of glacier dynamics is a major source of uncertainty in assessments of sea-level rise from land-based ice. Through increased ice discharge into the oceans, accelerating glacier flow has the potential to considerably enhance ...

CD27 and ICOS as Targets of PD‐1/PD‐L1 Signaling to Regulate Resident Memory CD8+ T‐Cell‐Mediated Pulmonary Protection and Pathology

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Here it is revealed that the costimulatory receptors CD27 and ICOS are essential for the long‐term maintenance of PD‐1high CD8+ TRM cells following influenza infection. PD‐L1 blockade enhances the proliferation and activation of these cells through Nur77 activation downstream of the CD27/ICOS signaling axis, thereby boosting host immunity against ...

Optimising ice flow law parameters using borehole deformation measurements and numerical modelling

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2008
Internal ice strain rates have been measured along two boreholes drilled through Glacier de Tsanfleuron, Switzerland. Differences between these measurements and the output from a 3D numerical model of glacier motion have been minimized by a scheme that ...

Magnetometric investigation of glaciers Southern and Northern Inylchek adjacent to the Merzbacher Lake

open access: yesЛëд и снег, 2015
Results of areal magnetometric investigation of glaciers South and North Enilchek located in the vicinity of the Merzbaher Lake are presented. These stud- ies resulted in finding of the bow-shaped rock bar (riegel) under the South Enilchek Glacier that ...

A consistent glacier inventory for Karakoram and Pamir derived from Landsat data: distribution of debris cover and mapping challenges

open access: yesEarth System Science Data, 2018
. Knowledge about the coverage and characteristics of glaciers in High Mountain Asia (HMA) is still incomplete and heterogeneous. However, several applications, such as modelling of past or future glacier development, run-off, or glacier volume, rely on ...

A Set of Novel Venom Proteins Enables Parasitoid Wasps to Exploit Older Hosts and Coexist with Competitors

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study elucidates a molecular mechanism enabling species coexistence between parasitoid wasps, showing how Asobara japonica uses a set of novel venom proteins to delay host development and exploit older hosts, thereby achieving temporal niche partitioning with Leptopilina drosophilae. Abstract Interspecific competition can drive species coexistence

DUST LOADING OF THE ATMOSPHERE AND GLACIERS IN THE KUMTOR MINING AREA (AKSHYYRAK, TIEN SHAN)

open access: yesЛëд и снег, 2015
Industrial development of the Kumtor Gold Mine in the nival-glacial zone of Tien Shan (altitude ranging from 4000 to 4500 m a.s.l.) is inevitably accompanied by the release of some additional amounts of dust in atmosphere.

Identification and Mechanisms of Osteocyte Subsets Involved in the Pathological Progression of Osteoporosis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Osteocyte heterogeneity in bone remains poorly understood. This study identifies six distinct osteocyte subsets in mice, revealing a key subpopulation (BHR‐Ocys) that drives bone loss in osteoporosis. BHR‐Ocys promote osteoclast‐mediated resorption via a novel Sema5a‐Plxna1 signaling axis.
