Regional passive seismic monitoring reveals dynamic glacier activity on Spitsbergen, Svalbard [PDF]
Dynamic glacier activity is increasingly observed through passive seismic monitoring. We analysed near-regional-scale seismicity on the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard to identify seismic icequake signals and to study their spatial–temporal distribution ...

We present a highly detailed study of calving dynamics at Tunabreen, a tidewater glacier in Svalbard. A time-lapse camera was trained on the terminus and programmed to capture images every 3 seconds over a 28-hour period in August 2015, producing a ...

CALVING DYNAMICS DERIVED FROM SATELLITE SAR DATA IN SUPPORT OF MASS BALANCE ESTIMATIONS IN LANGE GLACIER, ANTARCTICA [PDF]
We present calving flux, calving rate, frontal retreat and volume change rate results in Lange Glacier from 2015 to 2017, including also velocity calculations in 2015, 2017 and 2018.

Modelling environmental influences on calving at Helheim Glacier in eastern Greenland [PDF]
Calving is an important mass-loss process for many glaciers worldwide, and has been assumed to respond to a variety of environmental influences. We present a grounded, flowline tidewater glacier model using a physically-based calving mechanism, applied ...

Assessment of glacial-earthquake source parameters
Glacial earthquakes are slow earthquakes of magnitude M~5 associated with major calving events at near-grounded marine-terminating glaciers. These globally detectable earthquakes provide information on the grounding state of outlet glaciers and the ...

Instability of a Calving Glacier Terminus [PDF]
Abstract An unstable situation can develop when a calving glacier (one that ends in water but is still grounded throughout) terminates on a shoal. This instability is largely a consequence of continuity and the extending flow which occurs up-glacier of the shoal.

‘Calving laws’, ‘sliding laws’ and the stability of tidewater glaciers [PDF]
AbstractA new calving criterion is introduced, which predicts calving where the depth of surface crevasses equals ice height above sea level. Crevasse depth is calculated from strain rates, and terminus position and calving rate are therefore functions of ice velocity, strain rate, ice thickness and water depth.

Are seasonal calving dynamics forced by buttressing from ice mélange or undercutting by melting? Outcomes from full-Stokes simulations of Store Glacier, West Greenland [PDF]
We use a full-Stokes 2-D model (Elmer/Ice) to investigate the flow and calving dynamics of Store Glacier, a fast-flowing outlet glacier in West Greenland.

Two Calving Laws for Grounded Iceberg-Calving Glaciers (Abstract only) [PDF]
Prediction of the future retreat of Columbia Glacier, Alaska, required a calving law for the boundary condition at the terminus. Qualitative observations on the variations of all major iceberg-calving glaciers of Alaska suggest that calving is high whenever glaciers terminate in deep water, and greatly reduced whenever they ...

Bathymetric Controls on Calving Processes at Pine Island Glacier [PDF]
Abstract. Pine Island Glacier is the largest current Antarctic contributor to sea level rise. Its ice loss has substantially increased over the last 25 years through thinning, acceleration and grounding line retreat. However, the calving line positions of the stabilizing ice shelf did not show any trend within the observational record (last 70 years ...
