Mapping alpine glaciers changes from space

IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2003
This paper presents the results obtained from the analysis of a set of multitemporal Landsat images for the study of the status of the Italian Alpine glaciers. A fuzzy set based classification technique has permitted the identification of snow and exposed ice in glaciated areas.

Glacier changes in Glacier Bay, Alaska, during 2000–2012

International Journal of Remote Sensing, 2016
This article presents measurements of glacier surface areas, mean snow line altitude MSLA values, mean snow accumulation area ratio MAAR values, and elevation changes in the Glacier Bay, Alaska, using Landsat Thematic Mapper TM/Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus ETM+ images and digital elevation models DEMs from Shuttle Radar Topography Mission SRTM

The Health of Glaciers: Recent Changes in Glacier Regime

Climatic Change, 2003
Glacier wastage has been pervasive during the last century; small glaciers and those in marginal environments are disappearing, large mid-latitude glaciers are shrinking slightly, and arctic glaciers are warming. Net mass balances during the last 40 years are predominately negative and both winter and summer balances (accumulation and ablation) and ...

Glacier Changes and Permafrost Distribution

2015
Glaciers, snow cover and permafrost are important storages of terrestrial fresh water and are released from the storage by melting processe having a seasonal dynamics. Their changes over time can have significant impacts on the water cycle controlling the discharge behaviour of alpine rivers and on natural disasters relating to thawing of glaciers ...

Secular glacier mass balances derived from cumulative glacier length changes

Global and Planetary Change, 2003
Glacier mass changes are considered to represent natural key variables with respect to strategies for early detection of enhanced greenhouse effects on climate. The main problem, however, with interpreting worldwide glacier mass balance evolution concerns the question of representativity.

Glaciers Evolution in a Changing World

2017
Glaciers have always played an important role in human history, and currently, they are carefully observed as climate change sentinels. Glacier melt rate is increasing, and its mass balance is continuously negative. This issue deserves accurate and in-depth studies in order to, adequately, monitor its state.

Glaciers and Climate Change

2001
Although my book focuses on valley glaciers, it is not intended to provide a basic course in glaciology, nor does it claim to give a state-of-the-art picture of glacier research. It consists mainly of the personal reflections of a meteorologist who gradually became interested in glaciers and is written primarily for persons with a general interest in ...

Glacier Science and Environmental Change

2006
Glacier Science and Environmental Change is an authoritative and comprehensive reference work on contemporary issues in glaciology. It explores the interface between glacier science and environmental change, in the past, present, and future. Written by the world's foremost authorities in the subject and researchers at the scientific frontier where ...
