Laboratory Models of Glacier Dynamics

Geological Society of America Bulletin, 1972
Excellent laboratory models of glaciers were produced by pouring a mixture of molding plaster and water down a prefashioned trough of nonabsorbent material. The plaster models simulate the dynamics of glacier flow and accurately display many surface and internal structures common to real glaciers, including crevasse and flow patterns, icefalls and ...

Ice Composition and Glacier Dynamics

1991
The study of ice composition represents an effective tool in our understanding of the dynamics of glaciers, ice sheets and ice shelves. The authors of this work relate the distribution of isotopes and impurities in ice masses to ice flow, to the key zone close to the ice-substratum interface and to the mechanisms effective in the contact zone between ...

Rock glacier dynamics and paleoclimatic implications

Geology, 1999
Many rock glaciers contain massive ice that may be useful in paleoclimate studies. Interpreting geochemical ice-core records from rock glaciers requires a thorough understanding of rock glacier structure and dynamics. High-precision surface-velocity data were obtained for the Galena Creek rock glacier, Absaroka Mountains, Wyoming.

Dynamics of an alpine cirque glacier

American Journal of Science, 2010
Alpine cirques are excavated by glacial erosion, a process that depends in turn on the movement of ice by basal sliding. Cirque glacier flow is usually depicted as rotational sliding of a rigid block, but this model is based on little evidence and implies unorthodox glacier behavior given typical cirque dimensions.

Surging glaciers I: dynamics and geometry

Acta Mechanica, 2020
It is likely that in surging glaciers so-called selected dynamic states occur in a zone extending from the surge front upwards to a cross section in the region of extreme velocity. Selected dynamic states of glacier zones are determined mathematically by requirements for the three external longitudinal forces, which are exerted on its lower bounding ...

Dynamics of the Glaciers of Georgia

2017
This chapter discusses the dynamics of the glaciers of Georgia by periods of individual decades since the LIA to the present day. The rates of old glaciers are reconstructed based on the micro-stade moraines; also the topographic maps of the 19–20th centuries and the modern satellite images (Landsat/ASTER) are used.

Changes in glacier dynamics during land-to-lake glaciers transition in Patagonian glaciers.

Glacier retreat and the transition from land to lake termini can accelerate mass loss through various feedback mechanisms. This study examines the dynamic changes during the land-to-lake transition of four neighboring glaciers (Exploradores, Grosse, Reichter and Gualas) located in the maritime-humid climate of the western Northern Patagonian Icefields,
