Rock glacier inventory, permafrost probability distribution modeling and associated hazards in the Hunza River Basin, Western Karakoram, Pakistan.

Science of the Total Environment, 2021
The destabilization of rock glaciers and permafrost variations is of great importance to the safety of the population and infrastructure in the Karakoram region because of their effects on land stability and river obstructions. In this study, we compiled

Melting glaciers: Hidden hazards

Science, 2017
In her In Depth News story “Chile's glacial lakes pose newly recognized flood threat” (10 March, p. [1004][1]), J. Palmer did not mention that melting glaciers pose risks beyond flooding. The water itself contains hidden hazards.

Glacier recession and the changing rockfall hazard: Implications for glacier tourism

New Zealand Geographer, 2015
AbstractRapid recession and thinning of mountain glaciers worldwide are resulting in changes to glacier surface morphology, which are exacerbated by increased rockfall and debris accumulation at lateral margins. Rockfall can be a hazard to people visiting and working on glaciers.

Glacier-related hazards and climatic change

AIP Conference Proceedings, 1992
Climatic warming during the last 100–150 years has resulted in a significant glacier ice loss from mountainous regions of the world. Most glaciers have undergone thinning and their margins have retreated significantly since the Little Ice Age.

The Engineering Geology Hazards of Rock Glaciers

Environmental & Engineering Geoscience, 1985
Rock glaciers are common, yet, because of the association with past periglacial and glacial activity, are often ignored as present day engineering hazards. As alpine development increases, rock glacier location and analysis becomes vital. Air and ground reconnaissance easily identifies rock glaciers using four characteristics: 1) slope angle somewhere ...

Inter–Intraseasonality of Meteorological Drivers of Chorabari Glacier, Central Himalaya: Implications for Mass Fluctuations and Associated Hazards

Journal of Hydrometeorology
High-altitude meteorological data are scarce in the Himalayan region, particularly for glacierized catchments. In-depth knowledge of meteorological variables is crucial to describe numerous cryospheric processes and associated hazards. The present study

Velocity Changes of Rock Glaciers and Induced Hazards

2014
Recent observations and geodetic measurements in the European Alps show that changes are occurring on rock glacier dynamics, ranging from moderate velocity variations to strong acceleration or even total collapse. These changes can be related to the ground temperature and to climate warming.

Glacier Detachment Hazard Analysis in the West Kunlun Shan Mountains

IGARSS 2019 - 2019 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2019
In February 2018, we identified an unnamed glacier in the West Kunlun Shan mountains which showed crevasses extremely similar to the detachment patterns of two glaciers on the Western Tibetan Plateau near lake Aru Co before their catastrophic collapse.

Single pass InSAR missions for monitoring hazardous surging glaciers

2017 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS), 2017
Temporally resolved, 3-dimensional surface elevation data provide valuable insight into glacier dynamics, e.g. glaciers surges: short periods of rapid acceleration and mass transport which can pose significant hazard potential. Particularly in remote locations, such hazards can develop unobserved by the downstream communities at risk.
