A revised Canadian perspective: progress in glacier hydrology

Hydrological Processes, 2005
AbstractCurrent research into glacier hydrology is occurring at a time when glaciers around the world, particularly those whose hydrological regimes affect populated areas, are shrinking as they go through a state of perpetual negative annual mass balance.

Fate of glacier surface snow‐originating bacteria in the glacier‐fed hydrologic continuums

Environmental Microbiology, 2021
Summary Glaciers represent important biomes of Earth and are recognized as key species pools for downstream aquatic environments. Worldwide, rapidly receding glaciers are driving shifts in hydrology, species distributions and threatening microbial diversity in glacier‐fed aquatic ecosystems. However, the impact of glacier surface snow‐

The eco-hydrology of glacier surfaces

2019
Recent work has highlighted the importance of the so-called “weathering crust” as a microbially and hydrologically active layer on glacier surfaces. However, this layer is yet to undergo investigation, with no estimates of water, microbial or nutrient fluxes through it to downstream freshwater and marine ecosystems.

Glacier hydrology and the potential for subglacial karstification

Norsk Geografisk Tidsskrift - Norwegian Journal of Geography, 1984
Contemporary models of subglacial hydrology identify two quasi-independent hydrologic systems at the bed of temperate alpine glaciers: a dendritic, low pressure conduit network and a more extensive, high pressure regelation film. Observations in Castleguard Cave beneath the Columbia Icefield suggest that this distinction continues into the groundwater ...

Perennial névés and the hydrology of rock glaciers

Permafrost and Periglacial Processes, 1992
AbstractFrom 1986 to 1990 water tracing was carried out in three rock glaciers in the Upper Val de Réchy. Results indicate different patterns of circulation depending on the size and degree of activity of the rock glaciers. Two rock glaciers show rapid superficial flow and one has slow interstitial flow. This is analogous to supra‐ and subglacial flow.

Glacier-permafrost hydrological interconnectivity: Stagnation Glacier, Bylot Island, Canada

Geological Society, London, Special Publications, 2005
Abstract The complex thermal structure in areas where polythermal glaciers and continuous permafrost are present increases the potential for direct linkages between subsurface water conduits within glaciers and permafrost. In this study, hydrologic features of a glacier and the surrounding ice-cored moraines were examined and the potential ...

A multicomponent coupled model of glacier hydrology

2009
Multiple lines of evidence suggest a causal link between subglacial hydrology and phenomena such as fast-flowing ice. This evidence includes a measured correlation between water under alpine glaciers and their motion, the presence of saturated sediment beneath Antarctic ice streams, and geologic signatures of enhanced paleo-ice flow over deformable ...
