Polar ice is an important component of the natural system, affecting global climate on large as well as small scale. The Antarctic ice sheet has undergone significant changes in the past and governed the earth’s climatic system. This ice sheet appears to have been very dynamic and yet, not much is known about the processes involved for this dynamism ...

GLACIER SURFACE MONITORING BY MAXIMIZING MUTUAL INFORMATION [PDF]
Abstract. The contribution of Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PolSAR) images compared with the single-channel SAR in terms of temporal scene characterization has been found and described to add valuable information in the literature. However, despite a number of recent studies focusing on single polarized glacier monitoring, the potential of ...

Mid-Term Monitoring of Glacier’s Variations with UAVs: The Example of the Belvedere Glacier [PDF]
Recently, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) have opened up unparalleled opportunities for alpine glacier monitoring, as they allow for reconstructing extensive and high-resolution 3D models. In order to evaluate annual ice flow velocities and volume variations, six yearly measurements were carried out between 2015 and 2020 on the debris-covered Belvedere ...

Monitoring Glacier Outburst Floods [PDF]
A review is given of the phenomenon of glacier outburst floods. Geographical distribution, modes of occurrence of glacier-dammed lakes and modes of lake-emptying are discussed. Techniques of monitoring the filling and emptying of glacier-dammed lakes are evaluated and procedures for forecasting the magnitude and frequency of floods are analyzed.

Three-dimensional movement inversion of Shisha Pangma glacier using Sentinel-1 and Landsat8 images
SAR offset and optical offset are important techniques for glacier movement monitoring, but there are few researches on 3D deformation by integrating images from different platforms.

Worldwide Assessment of National Glacier Monitoring and Future Perspectives
It is widely accepted that glaciers are retreating throughout the world and that their decline causes serious impacts on many societies. Knowledge of glacier distribution and quantification of glacier changes is crucial to assessing the impact of glacier

Which glaciers are the largest in the world?
Glacier monitoring has been internationally coordinated for more than 125 years. Despite this long history, there is no authoritative answer to the popular question: ‘Which glaciers are the largest in the world?’ Here, we present the first systematic ...

Glacier monitoring by satellite
A multitemporal analysis on the Mount Disgrazia glaciers was performed by using the 1975, 1978 and 1980 MSS Landsat images. On these images the glaciers were completely described in their boundaries and surface features. Fixed structures were used along their boundaries as fiducial points of the ground control table for the multitemporal comparison of ...
