Refining the timing of Middle Pleistocene (MIS 12 to MIS 6) ice advances into northern central Europe: sedimentological analysis and single‐grain luminescence dating of glaciotectonic complexes and tunnel‐valley fills

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
We summarize the current state of knowledge on the age of the Middle Pleistocene ice advances into northern central Europe and provide 25 new single‐grain feldspar luminescence ages of Elsterian and Saalian glacigenic sediments to constrain the age of the ice advances and their tentative correlation with marine isotope stages/substages.

Distinct characteristics and mechanisms of two tidewater glaciers exhibiting velocity anomalies in western Svalbard

open access: yesGIScience & Remote Sensing
Svalbard hosts numerous tidewater glaciers whose dynamic responses are critical to polar environmental change and global sea-level rise. This study investigates Tunabreen glacier and Osbornebreen glacier in Svalbard using multi-source remote sensing data

Anisotropic Radial Basis Function Methods for Continental Size Ice Sheet Simulations

open access: yes, 2017
In this paper we develop and implement anisotropic radial basis function methods for simulating the dynamics of ice sheets and glaciers. We test the methods on two problems: the well-known benchmark ISMIP-HOM B that corresponds to a glacier size ice and ...

Flow‐pattern evolution of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet indicated by the subglacial lineation record over Norway, Sweden and Finland

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
We present a 25‐stage reconstruction of the ice‐flow pattern evolution of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet based on mapping and analysis of ~240 000 subglacial lineations and lineation fields across Norway, Sweden, Finland, and parts of NW Russia. Our reconstruction uses a glacial geomorphological inversion approach, in which we generated 611 individual ...

Identifying the pre‐Odra river system with hydroacoustic and seismic reflection imagery offshore Rügen Island, southern Baltic Sea

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
Understanding the course and dynamics of ancient river systems, such as the pre‐Odra, provides valuable insights into the post‐glacial evolution of landscapes and riverine processes. The northwest‐trending pre‐Odra was an important drainage system of the European mainland into the Baltic Basin during and after the Scandinavian Ice Sheet retreat ...

Utilising seismic station internal GPS for tracking surging glacier sliding velocity

open access: yesJournal of Glaciology
Glacier ice flux is a key indicator of mass balance; therefore, accurate monitoring of ice dynamics is essential. Satellite-based methods are widely used for glacier velocity measurements but are limited by satellite revisit frequency.

Rock Glacier Velocity: An Essential Climate Variable Quantity for Permafrost

open access: yesReviews of Geophysics
AbstractRock glaciers are distinctive debris landforms found worldwide in cold mountainous regions. They express the long‐term movement of perennially frozen ground. Rock Glacier Velocity (RGV), defined as the time series of the annualized surface velocity of a rock glacier unit or a part of it, has been accepted as an Essential Climate Variable ...

Thorncliffe Formation: A proglacial to subglacial lacustrine basin sequence, Greater Toronto Region, Canada

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
Map of Lower sediment (LS) thickness is a surrogate for the distribution of Thorncliffe Formation (TF) and ~75% of TF thickness from the slope of Niagara Escarpment east to Brighton. Inset images show the LS sequence at the Don Valleys brickyards (DVBY) and undeformed TF sand and gravel (~15 m) below Newmarket Till (NT) at sites L and Co.

Biodiversity‐driven spatial conservation planning to delineate temporally stable regions

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract The accelerating loss of biodiversity underscores the critical need for effective conservation strategies, particularly in the face of climate change and anthropogenic pressures. We devised a conservation planning framework that adopts a temporal stacking approach to species distribution models and landscape connectivity analyses. These models

Workshop - Amundsen Sea Embayment Tectonic and Glacial History - Programme and Abstracts [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Overall Objective: Review existing data and identify priorities for future geoscience research (terrestrial, marine and airborne) in the Amundsen Sea embayment (ASE) region required to develop a better understanding of the past, present and future ...
