Rediscovery of Hyalinobatrachium chirripoi (Anura: Centrolenidae) in southeastern Costa Rica

open access: yesRevista de Biología Tropical, 2004
The Suretka glass frog, Hyalinobatrachium chirripoi, has been recently rediscovered in the south-eastern region of Costa Rica. This species was last reported in Costa Rica in the 1950’s. H. chirripoi is distinguished from H. colymbiphyllum, which appears

Three-photon excitation of quantum dots with a telecom band ultrafast fiber laser [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
We demonstrate three-photon excitation in quantum dots with a mode-locked fiber laser operating in the telecommunications band. We compare spectra and intensity dependence of fluorescence from one- and three-photon excitation of commercially available ...

Dealing With Inbuilt Age: A Bayesian Approach to Radiocarbon Dating of Rice, Bamboo and Charcoal From Non Ban Jak, Thailand

open access: yesArchaeometry, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT New radiocarbon determinations from rice grains and bamboo have been obtained from Non Ban Jak, Northeast Thailand. These, along with charcoal, date a late Iron Age building sequence. The results come from short‐lived species and charcoal with potential inbuilt age. We built a series of Bayesian models to obtain a reliable chronology.

PROTEINS OF PAROTOID GLAND SECRETIONS FROM TOADS OF THE GENUS BUFO [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
Freeze-dried parotoid gland secretions from toads of the genus Bufo contained large proportions of protein (25-35% by weight). SDS-PAGE suggested that secretions from several species of Bufo contained mixtures of proteins in the relative molecular mass ...

Resource Availability Overrides Predator Presence in Mosquito Oviposition Habitat Selection

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
Gravid Culex quinquefasciatus balance predation risk against resource availability when selecting oviposition sites. In outdoor mesocosms, we factorially manipulated sugarcane jaggery (resource) and notonectid predators (adult vs. nymph; caged vs. free‐swimming) across 2 years.

All reflective FROG using near 90° retro-reflecting mirror for single shot intensity and phase profile measurement of ultra-short laser pulse

open access: yesResults in Optics
In this paper, we propose a novel scheme for an all-reflective FROG device using a near-90° retro-reflecting mirror for the complete single-shot measurement of intensity and phase of ultra-short laser pulses.

Signal transducer and activator of transcription-1 localizes to the mitochondria and modulates mitophagy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) proteins are latent transcription factors that have been shown to be involved in cell proliferation, development, apoptosis, and autophagy. STAT proteins undergo activation by phosphorylation at
