SmallTalk: a novel small‐sized fusion tag for peptide expression and purification

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The SmallTalk fusion tag allows for the efficient expression and purification of soluble recombinant proteins or peptides in Escherichia coli. Testing with SmallTalk‐GFP confirmed that the proteins were soluble and folded correctly, while SmallTalk‐Bin1b maintained its antimicrobial activity against various bacterial isolates. This streamlined workflow

Preparation and microstructure of machinable Al2O3/mica composite by ball milling and hot-press sintering

open access: yesScience and Engineering of Composite Materials, 2016
A machinable α-Al2O3/mica composite was prepared by hot-press sintering. In this experiment, a mica-contained glass ceramic in the MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-F glassy system was employed and the base glass powders were obtained by traditional melting-quenched method.

Critical exponents in Ising spin glasses

open access: yes, 1997
We determine accurate values of ordering temperatures and critical exponents for Ising Spin Glass transitions in dimension 4, using a combination of finite size scaling and non-equilibrium scaling techniques.

Hands‐on protocol for preparing water‐soluble fractions from agri‐food samples for NMR‐based metabolomics analysis

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This research protocol outlines a workflow for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)‐based metabolomics in the agri‐food sector. Using two case studies—strawberry leaves (solid matrix) and wine (liquid matrix)—it details the procedures for sample preparation, data acquisition, and processing.

Rate-Dependent Avalanche Size in Athermally Sheared Amorphous Solids

open access: yes, 2009
We perform an extensive numerical study of avalanche behavior in a 2D LJ glass at T=0, sheared at finite strain rates $\dot\gamma$. From the finite size analysis of stress fluctuations and of transverse diffusion we show that flip-flip correlations ...

Pinching a glass reveals key properties of its soft spots

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, 2020
Significance Glasses form when liquids are quickly cooled. Many of the properties of glasses are universal—i.e., independent of their composition and the liquid-phase temperature Tp from which they were cooled.

Mesoporous Bioactive Glass Combined with Graphene Oxide Quantum Dot as a New Material for a New Treatment Option for Dentin Hypersensitivity

open access: yesNanomaterials, 2020
Dentin hypersensitivity is one of the most common clinical conditions usually associated with exposed dentinal tubules. The purpose of this study was to identify the potential of a graphene oxide quantum dot coating for mesoporous bioactive glass ...

Lack of Ultrametricity in the Low-Temperature phase of 3D Ising Spin Glasses

open access: yes, 2004
We study the low-temperature spin-glass phases of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick (SK) model and of the 3-dimensional short range Ising spin glass (3dISG). For the SK model, evidence for ultrametricity becomes clearer as the system size increases, while for ...

Raman‐based label‐free microscopic analysis of the pancreas in living zebrafish larvae

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Forward stimulated Raman scattering (F‐SRS) and epi coherent anti‐Stokes Raman scattering (E‐CARS) allow label‐free discrimination of distinct subcellular structures in the pancreas of living zebrafish larvae. Given the straightforward applicability, we anticipate broad implementation of Raman microscopy in other organs and across various biomedical ...
