Understanding bio‐based polymers: A study of origins, properties, biodegradation and their impact on health and the environment

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This review provides an overview of bio‐based polymer sources, their unique functional properties and their environmental impact, and addresses their role as sustainable alternatives. It discusses end‐of‐life options, including composting and anaerobic digestion for renewable energy.

Possible Ergodic-nonergodic regions in the quantum Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin glass model and quantum annealing

open access: yes, 2018
We explore the behavior of order parameter distribution of quantum Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model in the spin glass phase using Monte Carlo technique for the effective Suzuki-Trotter Hamil- tonian at finite temperatures and that at zero temperature ...

Promiscuous stimulation of HSP70 ATPase activity by parasite‐derived J‐domains

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum exports three highly homologous yet functionally divergent J‐domain proteins into human erythrocytes. Here, we show that J‐domains isolated from all three proteins effectively stimulate the ATPase activity of both endogenous host and exported parasite HSP70 chaperones.

Quantum-to-classical crossover in the spin glass dynamics of cavity QED simulators

open access: yesPhysical Review Research
By solving the quench dynamics of a frustrated many-body spin-boson problem, we investigate the role of spin size on the dynamical formation of spin-glass order. In particular, we observe that quantum and classical spin glasses exhibit markedly different

Single‐molecule DNA flow‐stretch assays for high‐throughput DNA–protein interaction studies

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We describe an optimised single‐molecule DNA flow‐stretch assay that visualises DNA–protein interactions in real time. Linear DNA fragments are tethered to a surface and stretched by buffer flow for fluorescence imaging. Using λ and φX174 DNA, this protocol enhances reproducibility and accessibility, providing a versatile approach for studying diverse ...

Rate-Dependent Avalanche Size in Athermally Sheared Amorphous Solids

open access: yes, 2009
We perform an extensive numerical study of avalanche behavior in a 2D LJ glass at T=0, sheared at finite strain rates $\dot\gamma$. From the finite size analysis of stress fluctuations and of transverse diffusion we show that flip-flip correlations ...

Systemic dysregulation of apolipoproteins in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis serum

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal disease that damages motor neurons. This study found that people with ALS show significant changes in blood fats and the proteins that carry them. Several apolipoproteins were higher, lipid balances were altered, and normal protein–lipid relationships were disrupted.

Size-dependent radiative cooling power of glass-polymer metafilms

open access: yesMaterials & Design
Glass-polymer metamaterial, in which glass microspheres are randomly distributed in a polymer matrix, has been demonstrated to be a highly efficient daytime radiative cooling material that can be manufactured via roll-to-roll processes at scale and at ...

Critical interface: twisting spin glasses at $T_c$

open access: yes, 2010
We consider identical copies of spin glasses in finite dimension coupled at the boundaries. This allows to identify the spin glass analogous of twisted boundary conditions in ferromagnetic system and leads to the definition of an interface free-energy ...

Marked Long‐term Improvement in Lung Function in Melanoma Differentiation‐associated Protein 5 (MDA5) Antibody Positive Dermatomyositis Patients: Experience of a Single Center Longitudinal Cohort in North America

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, Accepted Article.
Objective The objective of this study was to describe the longitudinal disease course and pulmonary outcomes of North American patients with melanoma differentiation‐associated gene 5 antibody (MDA5 ab) associated dermatomyositis (DM). Methods Thirty patients with MDA5 ab DM were identified in a single center longitudinal cohort of 352 patients with ...
