Effect of Different Surface Treatments on the Surface Roughness and Gloss of Resin-Modified CAD/CAM Ceramics

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2022
The purpose of this in vitro study is to compare the roughness and gloss of four resin-modified CAD/CAM ceramics after different surface treatments. Forty-eight specimens (1.20 × 12 mm2) were prepared from Lava Ultimate (LU), Vita Enamic (VE), Cerasmart (

Lead-Glazed Ceramic Fragments: Intentional Glazing or Metallurgical Accident?

open access: yesMetallography, Microstructure, and Analysis, 2023
AbstractCeramic fragments from an excavation by Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe in 2014 around the deserted early medieval site of Brilon-Alme were subjected to archaeometric analysis. Except for one miniature object, they are coarse-grained tempered, and many of them are coated with a green-brownish glaze.

Effects of elevated levels of lead in ceramics on provenancing studies using non-destructive PXRF: a case study in Byzantine Cypriot glazed ceramics

open access: yes, 2013
Glazed ceramics are ubiquitous in the medieval archaeological record in the Mediterranean. The effects of lead volatilisation during firing of glazed ceramics on non-destructive PXRF (portable X-ray fluorescence) are evaluated using 25 Byzantine Cypriot ...

Incorporation of Selenium into Sol–Gel‐Derived Bioactive Glass: Influence on Glass Structure, Bioactivity, and its Selective Cytotoxicity

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Selenium was incorporated into a sol–gel‐derived bioactive glass to enable sustained therapeutic ion release. The selenium‐containing glass preserved bioactivity while selectively inducing cytotoxicity in osteosarcoma cells and maintaining osteoblastic viability.

A Field Guide to Glazed Thai Ceramics [PDF]

open access: yes, 1989
AT THE BEGINNING of the 1980s the accepted view on the development of Thai ceramics supported four ideas: (a) that kilns were set up in north-central Thailand in the thirteenth century to make glazed wares; (b) that production started at Sukhothai and ...

A Simplified Laminar Flow Model for the Pultrusion of Glass Fiber/Polyethylene Terephthalate Commingled Yarns

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A simplified thermoplastic pultrusion model is developed to predict thermal fields in glass fiber/polyethylene terephthalate (GF/PET) composites with reduced computational cost. By combining effective material homogenization, validation against literature data, and Gaussian‐process‐based optimization, the study reveals how heating limits, pulling speed,

Additive Manufacturing of Continuous Fibre Reinforced Composites: Process, Characterisation, Modelling, and Sustainability

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Additive manufacturing provides precise control over the placement of continuous fibres within polymer matrices, enabling customised mechanical performance in composite components. This article explores processing strategies, mechanical testing, and modelling approaches for additive manufactured continuous fibre‐reinforced composites.

Microstructure Evolution of a VMnFeCoNi High‐Entropy Alloy After Synthesis, Swaging, and Annealing

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The synthesis and processing (rotary swaging and annealing) of the novel VMnFeCoNi alloy is investigated, alongside the estimation of the grain size effect on hardness. Analysis of a wide grain size range of recrystallized microstructures (12–210 µm) reveals a low annealing twin density.

Social use and value of trade ceramics: an analysis of mortuary practices in Calatagan, southwest Luzon, the Philippines [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The widespread distribution of high-fired glazed ceramics from China and Mainland Southeast Asia is one of the striking features of protohistoric Philippines as evidenced in the archaeological record.
