Calculation of direct normal irradiation from global horizontal irradiation
AIP Conference Proceedings, 2012Concentrator Photovoltaic (CPV) systems only work with the Direct Normal Irradiance (DNI), so a knowledge of DNI data is required for the design and evaluation of these kinds of systems. DNI is not always measured at ground meteorological stations due to equipment costs.

An analytical approach for estimating the global horizontal from the global tilted irradiance
Solar Energy, 2019Abstract Knowledge of horizontal solar irradiance is crucial for the nowcasting and forecasting of generated photovoltaic (PV) power. High quality irradiance measurement devices, however, are typically not collocated with PV systems. The lack of measurements can be compensated by numerical weather models or satellite-derived products, but they ...

Energy, 2011
Abstract Solar radiation data are essential in the design of solar energy conversion devices. In this regard, empirical models were selected to estimate the global solar radiation on horizontal and inclined surfaces. The hourly solar radiation data measured at the study area during the period of 2004–2007, were used to calculate solar radiations ...

Variability of measured Global Horizontal Irradiation throughout Qatar
Solar Energy, 2015Abstract This paper presents a study of up to six years of ground measurements of Global Horizontal Irradiation (GHI), the total solar radiation arriving on a horizontal surface, collected by 12 automatic weather stations throughout Qatar. The year-to-year and monthly variations of daily GHI are calculated for each station; the average found is 5.80 ...

Ground measurements of Global Horizontal Irradiation in Doha, Qatar
Renewable Energy, 2014Abstract The present work shows an analysis of ground measurements of Global Horizontal Irradiation (GHI) taken at the Doha International Airport for the period 2008–2012. Inter-annual variability and monthly averages of GHI values were calculated from the available records of daily total irradiation values, analysed and discussed along with the ...

A model for diffuse and global irradiation on horizontal surfaces
Solar Energy, 1990Abstract The intensity of the direct radiation and the diffuse radiation at any time on a horizontal surface are each expressed as fractions of the intensity of the extraterrestrial radiation. Using these and assuming a random distribution of the bright sunshine hours and not too wide variations in the values of the transmission coefficients, a ...

Validation of the NSRDB–SUNY global horizontal irradiance in California
Solar Energy, 2010Abstract Satellite derived global horizontal solar irradiance (GHI) from the SUNY modeled dataset in the National Solar Radiation Database (NSRDB) was compared to measurements from 27 weather stations in California during the years 1998–2005. The statistics of spatial and temporal differences between the two datasets were analyzed and related to ...

Model for Estimation of Global Horizontal Irradiance in the Presence of Dust, Fog, and Clouds
IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, 2018The poor spatial resolution of available ground data provides an opportunity to estimate solar irradiation from computational models based on the satellite data. The developed model employs various spectral bands of the satellite data and focuses on distinguish weather signatures, such as: dust, aerosols, fog, and clouds.

Spatiotemporal Pattern Recognition and Nonlinear PCA for Global Horizontal Irradiance Forecasting
IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters, 2015This letter presents a novel technique for the forecast of the ground horizontal irradiance (GHI) from satellite-based images. To enhance the forecast accuracy, spatial information in addition to temporal information has been considered. This produced an increase in the computational load of the forecast process.

Aggregated independent forecasters of half-hourly global horizontal irradiance
Renewable Energy, 2022Abstract In this study, single and aggregated forecasters of half-hourly global horizontal irradiance are assessed. The models are the standard persistent model and four newly proposed static, dynamic, moving average, and amplified persistent models. These sub-forecasters are aggregated using equal, annual optimal, and monthly optimal weights.
