Buckling of built-up columns of pultruded fiber-reinforced polymer C-sections [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
This paper presents the test results of an experimental investigation to evaluate the buckling behavior of built-up columns of pultruded profiles, subjected to axial compression.

Micro and Nanostructural Diversity of Lizard Osteoderm Capping Tissue in Relation to Mechanical Performance

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study shows that lizard osteoderm capping tissue is a hyper‐mineralized hydroxyapatite layer consistently covering the superficial osteoderm surface in those species studied here, yet it varies greatly in morphology, nanostructure, and mechanical performance across species.

Cardiovascular magnetic resonance feature tracking in small animals – a preliminary study on reproducibility and sample size calculation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Background Cardiovascular magnetic resonance feature tracking (CMR-FT) is a novel tissue tracking technique developed for noninvasive assessment of myocardial motion and deformation. This preliminary study aimed to evaluate the observer’s reproducibility

Biointerface Membranes Orchestrating Site‐Specific Osteoimmunomodulatory and Antibacterial Effects for Enhanced Osseous Regeneration in Periodontal Therapy

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Here, a biointerface membrane engineered with site‐specific interfacial properties is developed. During implantation between gingival and bone defect, the membrane creates a pro‐osteogenic microenvironment, precisely modulates cellular activities at each biointerface, and facilitates the orchestration of complex healing events, ultimately leading to ...

Assessment of cardiac dysfunction in COVID-19 patients using layer-specific strain echocardiography in short-axis and long-axis views

open access: yesBMC Cardiovascular Disorders
Objectives Cardiac dysfunction is commonly observed in COVID-19 patients, but its impact on different myocardial layers—endocardial, mid-myocardial, and epicardial remains insufficiently understood.

Importance of three-dimensional speckle tracking in the assessment of left atrial and ventricular dysfunction in patients with myotonic dystrophy type 1

open access: yesRevista Portuguesa de Cardiologia, 2018
Introduction and Aim: Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is a multisystem disease in which cardiac involvement is common. The aim of this study was to identify early changes in left atrial (LA) mechanics and left ventricular (LV) systolic function in ...

A low energy theory for superfluid and solid matter and its application to the neutron star crust

open access: yes, 2011
We formulate a low energy effective theory describing phases of matter that are both solid and superfluid. These systems simultaneously break translational symmetry and the phase symmetry associated with particle number.
