Intracluster Globular Clusters [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 1995
Globular cluster populations of supergiant elliptical galaxies are known to vary widely, from extremely populous systems like that of UGC 9799, the centrally dominant galaxy in Abell 2052, to globular-cluster-poor galaxies such as NGC 5629 in Abell 2666.

Relativistic Binaries in Globular Clusters [PDF]

open access: yesLiving Reviews in Relativity, 2002
The galactic population of globular clusters are old, dense star systems, with a typical cluster containing $10^4 - 10^6$ stars. As an old population of stars, globular clusters contain many collapsed and degenerate objects.

Globular Cluster Formation in the Virgo Cluster [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2014
Metal poor globular clusters (MPGCs) are a unique probe of the early universe, in particular the reionization era. Systems of globular clusters in galaxy clusters are particularly interesting as it is in the progenitors of galaxy clusters that the ...

The Sausage Globular Clusters [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters, 2018
Abstract The Gaia Sausage is an elongated structure in velocity space discovered by Belokurov et al. using the kinematics of metal-rich halo stars. They showed that it could be created by a massive dwarf galaxy (∼5 × 1010 ) on a strongly radial orbit that ...

ROTATING GLOBULAR CLUSTERS [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2013
Internal rotation is considered to play a major role in the dynamics of some globular clusters. However, in only few cases it has been studied by quantitative application of realistic and physically justified global models. Here we present a dynamical analysis of the photometry and three-dimensional kinematics of omega Cen, 47 Tuc, and M15, by means of

The Structure of Globular Clusters [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1986
We report the preliminary results of a CCD surface photometry survey of a large fraction of all known Galactic globular clusters. About 1/5 of all surveyed clusters show a characteristic post-core-collapse (PCC) morphology. The PCC clusters are on average closer to the Galactic center than the King-model-like clusters.

Binaries in Globular Clusters [PDF]

open access: yesHighlights of Astronomy, 1998
Binary stars in a globular cluster (hereafter, GC) may be primordial (i.e. formed along with the cluster), or the result of cluster dynamics. “Dynamical” binaries can result from conservative three-body encounters (e.g. Spitzer, 1987) if a third star can carry away enough kinetic energy to leave two others bound, or from dissipative two-body encounters,

Globular clusters with Gaia [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2017
The treatment of crowded fields in Gaia data will only be a reality in a few years from now. In particular, for globular clusters, only the end-of-mission data (public in 2022-2023) will have the necessary full crowding treatment and will reach sufficient quality for the faintest stars.
