Organic Carbon Fluxes on Seasonal to Decennial Timescales in Patagonia's Largest River‐Fjord System

open access: yesGlobal Biogeochemical Cycles, Volume 39, Issue 12, December 2025.
Abstract Fjord sediments are global sinks of organic carbon (OC), contributing to the long‐term storage of atmospheric CO2. Despite this recognition, the transfer and burial of OC in fjord sediments are still poorly quantified and suffer from a sampling bias toward distal environments where marine OC is dominant.

Classification and evaluation of dangerous glacial lakes in the Hindukush region of Afghanistan (HKA) using a multi-criteria approach

open access: yesGeomatics, Natural Hazards & Risk
The formation and rapid expansion of glacial lakes following from climate change and rapid glacier recession in the Hindukush-Himalayan (HKH) region may increase the risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs).

First approaches towards modelling glacial hazards in the Mount Cook region of New Zealand’s Southern Alps [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Flood and mass movements originating from glacial environments are particularly devastating in populated mountain regions of the world, but in the remote Mount Cook region of New Zealand’s Southern Alps minimal attention has been given to these processes.

Long‐Term Lake Ice Evolution in a Large Endorheic Lake Undergoing Accelerated Shrinkage in a Semiarid Region of China

open access: yesWater Resources Research, Volume 61, Issue 12, December 2025.
Abstract Long‐term lake ice evolution under climate change has attracted global attention. However, despite the widespread occurrence of lake shrinkage in endorheic regions worldwide, few studies have explicitly addressed its effects on lake ice regimes.

Retrospective Analysis of Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) Using AI Earth InSAR and Optical Images: A Case Study of South Lhonak Lake, Sikkim

open access: yesRemote Sensing
On 4 October 2023, a glacier lake outburst flood (GLOF) occurred at South Lhonak Lake in the northwest of Sikkim, India, posing a severe threat to downstream lives and property.

Glacial Lakes Outburst Floods (GLOFs) modelling of Thulagi and Lower Barun Glacial Lakes of Nepalese Himalaya

open access: yesProgress in Disaster Science, 2020
Melting of glaciers is one of the major effects of recent atmospheric warming in the Himalayas which results in the development of supraglacial lakes that coalesce to form proglacial lakes.

Evaluating Winter Turbulent Heat Fluxes in a Hydrodynamic‐Ice Model of the Great Lakes

open access: yesWater Resources Research, Volume 61, Issue 12, December 2025.
Abstract Turbulent heat fluxes are affected by and influence the temperature dynamics and ice conditions of lakes. Significant efforts have been made to develop operational hydrodynamic and ice models for large lakes such as the North American Great Lakes.

Multi-Source Glacial Lake Outburst Flood Hazard Assessment and Mapping for Huaraz, Cordillera Blanca, Peru

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2018
The Quillcay catchment in the Cordillera Blanca, Peru, contains several glacial lakes, including Lakes Palcacocha (with a volume of 17 × 106 m3), Tullparaju (12 × 106 m3), and Cuchillacocha (2 × 106 m3).

Modeling the glacial lake outburst flood process chain in the Nepal Himalaya: reassessing Imja Tsho's hazard [PDF]

open access: yesHydrology and Earth System Sciences, 2018
The Himalayas of South Asia are home to many glaciers that are retreating due to climate change and causing the formation of large glacial lakes in their absence.

Identification of potentially dangerous glacial lakes in the northern Tien Shan [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Like in many other parts of the world, the glaciers in northern Tien Shan are receding, and the permafrost is thawing. Concomitantly, glacial lakes are developing.
