Accelerating River Discharge in High Mountain Asia

open access: yesAGU Advances, Volume 6, Issue 4, August 2025.
Abstract High Mountain Asia (HMA) plays a crucial role in Asian hydrology—its vast snow and glacier‐covered landscape significantly influences downstream river water supply for billions of people. Understanding the spatiotemporal pattern of river discharge in HMA aids effective water resource management and infrastructure planning.

Simulating glacial lake outburst floods with a two-phase mass flow model

open access: yesAnnals of Glaciology, 2016
To simulate a glacial lake outburst flood, we employ a comprehensive physically based general two-phase mass flow model (Pudasaini, 2012). This model accounts for a strong interaction between the solid and fluid phases and incorporates buoyancy and other

Altimetry-based ice-marginal lake water level changes in Greenland

open access: yesCommunications Earth & Environment
Greenland holds over 3300 ice-marginal lakes, serving as natural reservoirs for outflow of meltwater to the ocean. A sudden release of water can largely influence ecosystems, landscape morphology, ice dynamics and cause flood hazards.

Modeling the Impact of Mining Activities on the Dynamics and Evolution of a Kyrgyz Glacier

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Earth Surface, Volume 130, Issue 8, August 2025.
Abstract Glaciers worldwide are retreating because of climate change. However, local human activities also influence their dynamics. Here, we model the impact of gold mining operations on Davydov Glacier in the Inner Tien Shan, Kyrgyzstan, from the Little Ice Age through 2100 under different Shared Socioeconomic Pathway climate scenarios using a 3D ...

GLOF hazard map of the Phochu and Punatsangchu basins, Buhutan Himalaya

open access: yes, 2022
The data contain a raster format GLOF hazard map for the settlement along the Phochu and Punatsangchu basins. The map displays the overall hazard from the GLOF from four lakes (Bechung Tsho, Raphstreng Tsho, Thorthormi Tsho, and Lugge Tsho) in the Lunana glacier complex. The hazard map mainly covers Lunana, Wangdue Phodrang, and Punakha.

Studying Mass Movement Sources and Potential Glacial Lake Outburst Flood at Jiongpu Co, Southeastern Tibet, Using Multiple Remote Sensing Methods and HEC‐RAS Model

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Earth Surface, Volume 130, Issue 7, July 2025.
Abstract Glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) caused by mass movement into lakes are common disaster chains in High Mountain Asia (HMA). However, the volumes of potential avalanche sources and the associated overtopping flood processes remain inadequately understood, hindering GLOF hazard assessments.

Meltwater markedly exacerbates socioeconomic exposure to floods in the eastern Himalaya

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Letters
Flood hazards across high mountain Asia present pronounced complexity due to the combined influence of rainfall, meltwater, and glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs).

Hydrological regime of remote catchments with extreme gradients under accelerated change: the Baker basin in Patagonia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The Baker basin (27 000 km2) is located in one of the most pristine and remote areas of the planet. Its hydrological regime is poised to undergo dramatic changes in the near future due to hydropower development and climate change.
