Molecular and Cellular Events Mediating Glomerular Podocyte Dysfunction and Depletion in Diabetes Mellitus

open access: yesFrontiers in Endocrinology, 2014
The essential function of the kidney is to ensure formation of relatively protein-free ultra-filtrate, urine. The rate of filtration and composition of the primary renal filtrate is determined by the transport of fluid and solutes across the glomerular ...

Assessment of the Nova StatSensor whole blood point-of-care creatinine analyser for the measurement of kidney function in screening for chronic kidney disease [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Point-of-care testing for creatinine using a fingerprick sample and resultant estimated glomerular filtration rate has potential for screening for chronic kidney disease in community settings.

Evaluation of Canine Pancreas-Specific Lipase Activity, Lipase Activity, and Trypsin-Like Immunoreactivity in an Experimental Model of Acute Kidney Injury in Dogs. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
BackgroundDiagnosis of pancreatitis in dogs is complicated by extrapancreatic disorders that can alter the results of laboratory tests. Extrapancreatic disorders can also affect the diagnosis of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI).

Rewiring Neuroimmunity: Nanoplatform Innovations for CNS Disease Therapy

open access: yesAdvanced Therapeutics, EarlyView.
This review explores emerging nanoplatform strategies designed to modulate neuroimmune responses for treating central nervous system (CNS) disorders. It examines structural and microenvironmental barriers, advances in multifunctional and targeted nanotechnologies, and highlights clinical progress and translational challenges, offering insights into the

Systemic gene therapy with thymosin β4 alleviates glomerular injury in mice

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2022
Plasma ultrafiltration in the kidney occurs across glomerular capillaries, which are surrounded by epithelial cells called podocytes. Podocytes have a unique shape maintained by a complex cytoskeleton, which becomes disrupted in glomerular disease ...

IncRNA‐ZFAS1, an Emerging Gate‐Keeper in DNA Damage‐Dependent Transcriptional Regulation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
LncZFAS1 plays a crucial role during DNA damage response in mammalian cells. Loss of lncZFAS1 results in deficient DNA lesion removal and reduced cell viability. Mechanistically, lncZFAS1 modulates RNAPII phosphorylation and transcription and thereby promotes both GG‐NER and TC‐NER upon UV damage.

The association of coronary artery calcium score with glomerular filtration rate and the influence of sex, age, blood pressure, and cholesterol

open access: yesMedičnì Perspektivi, 2020
Chronic kidney disease puts an individual at a higher risk of all-cause and cardiovascular death. Coronary artery calcium score reflects the accumulation of calcium in the walls of the coronary arteries and a higher coronary artery calcium score is ...

Iohexol plasma clearance for measuring glomerular filtration rate in clinical practice and research: a review. Part 1: How to measure glomerular filtration rate with iohexol?

open access: yesClinical Kidney Journal, 2016
While there is general agreement on the necessity to measure glomerular filtration rate (GFR) in many clinical situations, there is less agreement on the best method to achieve this purpose.

Metabolic Stress‐Induced Choline Kinase α (CHKA) Activation in Endothelial Subpopulation Contributes to Diabetes‐Associated Microvascular Dysfunction

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study uncovers CHKA as a pivotal driver of vascular dysfunction in diabetic retinopathy and highlights its role in endothelial dysfunction through NAD⁺‐SIRT1‐Notch signaling. Single‐cell and functional analyses, combined with clinical and genetic validation, suggest CHKA as a promising therapeutic target for the prevention and treatment of ...

Microalbuminuria and estimated glomerular filtration rate

open access: yesSouth African Family Practice, 2012
Hypertension and diabetes mellitus are the major causes of renal damage and cardiovascular events. The co-existence of these conditions further increases the risk of progressive renal disease, cardiovascular events, and mortality.
