Facile synthesis of glycerol carbonate from glycerol using selenium‐catalyzed carbonylation with carbon monoxide

open access: yesHeteroatom Chemistry, 2010
AbstractThe commercial production of glycerol has increased considerably for several years, because of its rising inevitable formation as a by‐product of biodiesel. For the effective utilization of glycerol, a new synthesis of glycerol carbonate (4‐hydroxymethyl‐2‐oxo‐1,3‐dioxolane) that is used as solvents and raw material of plastics from glycerol ...

Glycerol carbonate synthesis via Zn(OBu)2/AlCl2(OBu) initiated-glycerolysis of urea

open access: yesChemistry of Inorganic Materials
Glycerol carbonate (4-hydroxymethyl-1,3-dioxolane-2-one) was efficiently synthesized from glycerolysis of urea initiated by Zn(OBu)2/Al(OBu)Cl2. The zinc-aluminum complex mixture was prepared from zinc chloride (ZnCl2) and aluminum tri-sec-butylate (Al ...

New synthesis of glycerol carbonate from glycerol using sulfur‐assisted carbonylation with carbon monoxide

open access: yesHeteroatom Chemistry, 2010
AbstractThe glycerol carbonate synthesis from glycerol, which is an inevitable by‐product of biodiesel production, was established. By combined sulfur‐assisted carbonylation of glycerol under 1.0 MPa of carbon monoxide at 80°C in DMF with oxidation by copper bromide(II), a facile synthetic method for glycerol carbonate in good yield was developed ...

Biomimetic Iridescent Skin: Robust Prototissues Spontaneously Assembled from Photonic Protocells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Uniform nanoparticles are induced to form arrays (photonic crystals) in the cores of biopolymer capsules, endowing these ‘protocells’ with structural color. These protocells are then assembled into large self‐standing objects, i.e., prototissues, with robust mechanical properties as well as iridescent optical properties.

Bio‐Friendly Artificial Muscles Based on Carbon Nanotube Yarns and Eutectogel Derivatives

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Solid‐state artificial muscles based on coiled commercial carbon nanotube yarns coated with eutectogel derivatives exhibit unipolar actuation through selective ion intercalation. Combining polyanionic and polycationic gels enables enhanced contractile stroke and high energy density.
